Does anyone have some really good suggestions for Books to teach different styles like Jazz, Blues, BoogieWoogie, Bepop, Stride, Walking Bass etc.

For the average player that spends a lot of time mostly on classical, contemporary and/or pop it can be really hard to break into some of these styles on your own.

It's also hard to find the right pace for these types of books too. Some just want very easy and simple introduction only (typically for Adult beginners). But others like me have been playing for years and have a good foundation and need something with enough meat on it to make a big enough impact.

Anybody know any good ones that can start out easy if they want but get really into the thick of it and teach enough variations and advanced techniques to really get you grounded in these styles (not just introduced)?

I'd hate to get a blues book that only taught me a blues scale and the 12 bar blues pattern. I can figure that much on my own. I want to learn to do anything bluesy EXCEPT the 12 bar blues if you know what i mean.

I'm looking for stuff that help me rock and roll a bit and provide an upbeat "Yang" to my usually slow and depressing classical/new age "Ying".

Thanks guys. These forums are great but I searched and didn't see too much on this subject.

Ah, the place to go with this question is he non-classical forum smile They know of what they speak, and a search there, or a new post, will get several suggestions.

And don't forget AB forum. There's a solid fan base there of Tim Richards' book, "Improvising Blues Piano." I've never worked with it, though, so can't vouch for it personally.

Here's a thread that was active a couple of years ago about the book:

Thanks, I wasn't sure what Forum to put this in. I'll move it over to non-classical.
