I'm looking at a '97 RX-1 being sold on consignment at a local shop. I've also played a brand new RX-1 at another dealer, and they both feel and sound pretty much the same. Has the technology on these models changed much in the last 13 years, or do they have basically the same components? And I know a well-maintained piano will last a long time, but this is probably the last one I'll ever buy (unless I win the lottery), and I want to make sure I'm not buying trouble. I'll get an independent inspection if I do go the used route.

The new RX-1 has an updated action called "Millennium-III" with carbon fiber in the parts which allows them to be made lighter. It is easier to play, repeats faster, and tends to be more controllable as well.

But what matters is what it feels like to you - there are some who prefer the more solid feel of a slightly heavier action, so if the used piano feels good to you then maybe it's right for you.

It's always a good idea to have the used piano checked by a technician, as the condition of the piano and how it has been cared for can mean more than anything.

How are prices for used RX-2's and RX-3's? If there are some old enough in your area to come close in price to a new RX-1, then they are definitely worth looking at.

New strings tend to sound better, and new actions don't wiggle around like very old ones. But some old pianos have neither issues and are very close in condition to new ones. It's all about what you can perceive.

Kawai's new action is nice, but so was their old one. It was good enough to be in their best pianos for a very long time with a great track record. Side by side, I've seen people's preferences go either way. Buying new is nice, but I would confirm what you experienced - that the new and used are very similar, not so different as to dismiss the used one.
