Could anyone explain what a number 8 under a bass clef means please? I'm hazarding a wild guess that it means you have to play an octave lower than shown on the music, but it would be great if someone could confirm this.

The music in question is Philip Glass Metamorphosis 1, 8th measure, however the 8 doesn't refer to the measure as it's used throughout the piece. Thanks!

8va------ will be an octave above and 8vb------- will be an octave below. The number 8 signifies the value of the interval which is exactly an octave. smile

Thanks for all the replies. I'm through to the end of the piece now - I just need to learn to play it properly! That youtube clip is excellent - beautifully played.
