I started a thread on the Pianists Corner about the difficulties in actually hearing and listening to one's playing, rather than 'hearing' how we would like to sound.

As this is such an essential skill for music making, and as it seems such a difficult ability to acquire, I wondered whether any teachers might like to put their views and/or give some advice. Any help will be very, very gratefully received!

Hi John,
I don't know if this is exactly what you mean, but I have students "write" music on manuscript paper. We start out small, just a few measures, and do it almost weekly as homework. When they come back I ask them to play it for me, then I play what I see. They are frequently surprised that my version of their piece sounds different than theirs and also different from what they intended.

I think this helps them to really look at the music rather just guessing at what they think it is. Also it helps them realize that just because it sounds good it's not necessarily what's written.

I agree that teaching listening is difficult, but it is a vital component to what we are doing.

It is better to be kind than to be right.
