This custom search works much better than the built in one and allows searching older posts.

Referral to a different teacher...?

Hey guys, I just want some opinions on this. I just finished my sophomore year in high school and am in summer. Today, at my piano lesson, my teacher told me she thinks it would be better if i transfer to her current piano teacher (This Guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denver_Oldham). Being with my piano teacher for 10 years and having learned well from her, I'm questioning whether I should or not. Her piano teacher certainly has more credentials and I do plan to transfer, but I don't know if I should for this following year, or if I should wait and stay with my current teacher until next year. Thoughts? Thanks in Advance!

Good general rule for anything: if someone wants to send you away, go.  Difficult though it may be in some ways. And especially when it's basically a compliment and a step forward, as this seems to be.

And yeah, go for it. Have you had any lessons with this prospective new teacher? Try it out and see if you'd be comfortable studying with him...

It seems to me that ten years is a long time - perhaps too long? - to be with one teacher; it may well be time to move on and perhaps that is what she is suggesting.

You could always opt to study with pianoloverus. He won't have you labor over any lengthy works, though he might ask you to analyse the length of the piece you're working on in relation to the other pieces you're working on. =p

BruceD probably has pointed out the reason for your teacher's suggestion and it is good to have a change, perhaps, after ten years. Are you feeling 'loyalty pangs?" I'm sure your present teacher feels you would gain more at this point by changing and that the suggested instructor is one in whom she has the confidence that you would be in good hands.
He has excellent credentials from the Wikipedia information so preparing you for further study elsewhere or continuing your study in Evans/Augusta would certainly mean an advantage. Assuming your personalities mesh it looks like a wise move. loyalty pangs are exactly what i'm feeling...  i've had her for a long time and a sudden change is probably gonna take a while to get used to... i know its for the better, but it's still hard to say goodbye

That's life, Skorpius! I still feel that my high school teacher was about the best I ever had but after graduation she would not teach me but said I needed other exposure so she cut me loose and I've had a wonderful journey with various teachers. She kept tabs on my studies and was there to consult but she never gave me another lesson.
So, I think your teacher, after ten years is doing something similar and you know that she will be interested in what you're working on, how you're approaching it, and will listen to you after the change. You'll still have her ear and support I'm sure. She's doing what she feels is in your best interest and while difficult, do it.

My first ever teacher tought me for 8 years, the 2nd for 6, the 3rd for 7, and they're still, all 3 of them my best (or worst..) critics, they all come to my concerts and give their unashamed comments, that's exactly what I expect from them, I cherish every moment I see them, couldn't miss them EVER.
