I often get a mental block on a passage which I learned before and had great difficulty overcoming it, perhaps due to be a too advanced piece for my skills at that time, however going back to it years later, being able to play properly much difficult pieces, I still get a mental block and as I get to that passage I still make the same mistakes as years ago. I know I can technically deal with it but my mind is still stuck in the past telling me I` going to falter.

Has this happened to anybody else and are there any techniques to overcome it?.

Thank you

it happened to me too, I could name a whole list of moments in pieces where the risk of memorylaps or technical trouble was foreseeable, I learned to isolate those moments, and they now are my daily practice stuff, and it really helps, they became my 'friends' instead of 'enemies', and I've overcome the fear that they might do something nasty to me during performance, I even thank them after a concert for not having been any pain in the ...

In my own searches to answer this question I have found only one real cure, memorize every single note of the score. Memorize it so well that you can literally write it out from memory. This will be agonising, but should get easier the more you do it.

I suggest memorizing the entire score because if you try only memorizing the section that contains the "mental-block" it sometimes happens that the block will just move to some other part of the score.

This is not the kind of answer anyone likes to hear but it is the only one I know of that works.

Sorry,

-Jeff

Good one, once I had to write down from, well, not-so-reliable memory the 2nd half of the 1st movement's developement-section of Chopin's 3rd sonata, it will never be out of my mind!
