I am currently studying Chopin's Mazurka Op.50 No.2 and I have a couple of questions.
First of all, this is very strange, I have an edition downloaded from here where the mazurka ends on a B flat in the bass staff. This is strange and doesn't sound good at all, and I haven't found it in other editions. I think the editor copied and pasted the final section from a previous section (it is a reprise) and didn't delete the final B flat, I don't know. (In the previous section it is OK, as it is basically an upbeat to bar #29.)

Secondly, Bailie advises to "spread" the chords for example in bars 61, 62 etc. (the ones with an acciaccatura), advising to play basically first the lower note of the chord, then the acciaccatura, then the upper note of the chord (always holding down the lower note of the chord)... Is this a common way to execute such chords preceded by an acciaccatura? The acciaccatura is always one half step higher than the higher note of the chord if you look at bars 61 and ff. I mean, it is nicer this way, but can it also be performed the "normal way" (simply first the acciaccatura then the chord)?

Thanks in advance, sorry if this sounds confused... frown

The Bb is definitely a typo.

My editions say nothing about the interpretation you mention (of m.61 etc.), but it sounds reasonable, so if you like it, do it.

I would venture to say that the final B-flat is a printing error.

As for the acciaccatura : I listened to both Ashkenazy's recording and Fou Ts'ong's recording and each plays it as a simple grace note before the chord, without breaking the chord. The only time I have seen this in Chopin as Baillie recommends, the chord itself has an arpeggio sign before it.

Regards,

Thanks, Nick and Bruce. That would be more accurate, with the arpeggio sign, and would make the execution clearer.

CA, be carefull with that site. I cheked out the swipesy score and besides mistakes on the score (I know they are probably mistakes since I checked a lot of renditions of the same piece, got my score from IMLSP, and the site version sounds worse), the fingering assigned in some passages is absolutely awkward.

Yes, it is not like the Petrucci library! I think once I found something that the Petrucci library didn't have, some posthumous work, but otherwise I very much prefer the Petrucci library!

For questions like your first one, I usually go to Chopin's First Editions Online and see what I can find. More often than not, it is helpful.

Yes, that is a good idea. I had actually tried, but when I clicked on that particular mazurka there was nothing. I even tried a couple of times. I was downloading something and it affected many things I was doing (including PW, very very slow)). However, when I clicked on other pieces it worked, so I thought they really didn't have it for some reason...
Today I just tried again and it is there... No Bb at the end, as predicted... smile

Oh, another factor that had originally attracted me to that site is that most Chopin scores (at least those I downloaded) have bar numbers...
