I guess I won't be playing anything for a while. I broke my left middle finger today. It's in a splint and sticks out "like a sore thumb." The ER doc says it's broken where the tendon attaches and that sometimes it doesn't heal there because the tendon is pulling on one part and forcing them apart. I'll be seeing a specialist next week to see what else, if anything, needs to be done. It sure is hard typing with only one hand. laugh

I'm so sorry! I hope everything heals up quickly and properly. It's good you're seeing a specialist to make sure.

Aaaaagh!!! That's awful - hope it heals soon. But typing with one hand gets easier - I did it while my arm was healing.

Oh yikes, I'm sorry - what a pain. Any idea how long you'll be in the splint? And, how did you manage to break it?

Hope it goes well with the specialist, and you can heal fast and get back to piano smile !

I am so sorry to hear that Dennis. Can you work on aspects of your playing with the opposite hand?

OOOOHHHHH NOOOOOO!!!!

I'm with Bill - I hope you recover quick and well. Your piano playing is a big part of my ABF recital life laugh

How did you do this (or is it too embarrassing to tell?)?

Let us know how the specialist visit goes. We're all thinking of you.

Given a choice I'd vote for my right hand since I really need to get the left working better. Have a speedy recovery!

P.S. Well, obviously given a choice I'd vote for neither hand ...

Wow, I hate that for you, Dennis.

This may not be any consolation for you, but I had a severe finger injury about 12 years ago and almost lost my left index finger. I got my hand too close to moving fan blade on a commercial A/C condenser fan. I was in the hospital for 3 days and had surgery on my finger. The orthopedic surgeon did a fine job saving my finger, although it is not 100%.

In all honesty, my finger injury is one of the reasons I started learning to play the piano, because it did affect playing my stringed instruments to an extent. It doesn’t seem to affect my piano playing, though.

You’ll be okay… it may take you a while to recover, but you’ll be back playing the piano sooner than you think!!

I’ll be praying for your speedy and complete recovery!!

Take care,

Rick

Holy moly Dennis! I hope you recover fully and quickly, too! I guess I'm a little luckier-I just seem to break toes. You'll have to find some one-hand pieces to play so we'll still have you in the recitals.

Thanks, everyone!

I broke it loading a couple of pieces of metal grid work onto a conveyor belt to take them downstairs. They are the things one sees clothing displays made of. In fact, they were pieces of a clothing display. The company I work for is the "official" supermarket and pharmacy of the Dallas Cowboys, and it is time to set up an extra display of player jerseys. Anyway . . . the topmost of the two pieces slid down on its own with the tip of my finger caught in one of the openings. The finger went through both pieces - one moving and one stationary. The result was predictable. I looked down expecting to see a bloody mess. There was no blood, but the finger was already swelling and was bent at an odd angle. I filled out some paperwork for our worker's comp insurance, then it was off to the ER for several hours. This is my first broken bone in many years. As a youngster I broke a finger, three toes and an ankle - mostly sports injuries - but they were a long time ago.

OOOOUUUUUCCCCHHHHH!

What a bummer. Hope it heals quickly, and also that you stick with your piano efforts, even if that means some one-handed playing for a while.

As my teacher would say "Goddang Dennis, you're a pianist; be careful with those hands".
Sorry to hear that; i pray for a quick and complete recovery.

Does it at least look bad enough that you can get special treatment from your family ? cry

Good luck

Cheers

Ouch! That's terrible, Dennis! Hope it recovers well.

There have been a few threads in the past, here and in the teacher's forum, about left hand only pieces for students who break arms, etc. Maybe you can find some of those to keep active.

Dennis,

I'm so sorry about your accident. Wishing you a speedy recovery and maybe the finger will come back stronger after the rehab period.

I had a student who broke his middle LH finger and it was in a splint for a good 2 months or so. I chose music that had the LH playing figures that were in perfect 5ths and didn't require stretching at all. I'd wait until you don't feel any pain before trying to play, though. But not all hope is lost! And you still have your RH smile

Ooh, so sorry to hear this!!! Wishing you a speedy recovery! Be sure to tell the specialist that you are a pianist, talking to him/her about things you both can do to make the healing process faster and more complete.

And keep a positive attitude, in the scheme of things, if you're going to injure a finger, I would guess that the LH middle finger is the best one, since you need your thumb and pinkie for octaves and it's not often that we need to stretch our middle finger. I think that will allow you to play without much negatice effect (after it's healed of course!) because of the shape of the hand.

Sending positive finger thoughts your way!!!

Ouch! Industrial injuries are scary, I got caught in a conveyor belt once a long time ago.

Good luck, Dennis, hope you heal fast and can get back to your piano soon.

Ouch, Dennis!

Whatever you do, don't test it to see if you still have pain or to see if it is getting better. The more pain-free days you have the better. Patience is the key element.

Look forward to knowing what the specialist tells you next week. Take it easy. Hope you get past this quickly so you can get back to you persuing your interests, including your most excellent piano!

So sorry to hear about your injury! I broke a thumb a couple years ago - no fun being in a splint or cast, but I was grateful not to need surgery. Hope you're on the mend and back to playing soon!

Son of a ... Sorry to hear of your misfortune Dennis, hopefully it will heal well and not be a factor in a few months. Morodiene idea seems to be a good option.

In the meantime you can learn some 1980s pop hits. (Those keyboard players never used their left hand.) In fact, something like an old Flock of Seagulls song can be played with one or two fingers! I occaisionally learn some of that old synthesizer stuff so I can both play with sound design and have the satisfaction of learning a whole song in 30 minutes grin
