Avoid X and Z stands. X stands have very limited legroom, and you'll be constantly banging your knees and fishing around in vain for the pedal with your toes. Z stands are fiddly to set up and take down, and tend to have sharp corners and limited room for wider benches.

Stands:

Quik-Lok W550 / On-Stage Stands WS8550 $99.99 @ www.zzounds.com (own it)

Quik-Lok M-91 $99.99 @ www.musiciansfriend.com (don't own it, but it looks cool)

Stools *snicker*:

QuikLok BZ-7 $39.95 @ www.zzounds.com (own it)

I am using the Quik-Lok M-91 with my Kawai MP8II, and I love it. The design of the stand is very conducive for sit-down (digital) piano practice at home, and it is very sturdy.

As far as music stands go, I have been impressed with the layout of the M-91. I have a separate M-91 (with M-92 second tier attachment) setup for my live rock band outfit. The stand is very ergonomically helpful while playing two synths standing up, especially since I tend to use sustain pedals a lot (I feel that other keyboard stands' designs, such as the X-style, leave less room for my legs to play footsies with the pedals).

synthcat, the back bar on the M-91 on the floor looks like it would corral pedals pretty good, is that true? The M-91 doesn't look like it folds up all that small, but setup and teardown must be a snap.

The BZ-7 stool folds up really small really fast, and the height adjustment is trivially easy. Many X-stools (sounds like a painful medical condition smile ) require the removal of bolts and such to change the height or to flatten them for storage.

Will you be moving it around much? If you will be then I just sold one of these. I liked it but had little use for it.
Ulltimate Suport Stand

They are more sturdy and rigid than they look (it is rated for 300 pounds) but the neat thing if you have to move it around is that all the parts fit inside the big center column and it make for a very compact package that is it's own shipping case. No tools are required to set it up.

ChrisA, I've seen those at my local Guitar Center. They seem rather prone to tipping.

On my M-91 setups, I let the pedal cables dangle loosely--I haven't tried to corral it yet (with the MP8II, my setup is for a sit-down piano practice, so the pedals really don't shift that much, at least not on my carpeted floor).

The legs of the M-91 fold inward (over the "U" at the back), and the tops downward for quick transport. It's not the most compact stand out there, but I like how "flat" the stand becomes when being transported. It fits into the bandmate's vehicle rather nicely. smile
