I've had a Kawai CA63 for a few months and am very pleased with it but today a problem has developed:

When I now press the 'Rec' button the following things happen:

There is no sound at all when playing any key
There is no response at all from any of the buttons on the keypad
The display doesn't change (unlike before)
The 'Reverb' key light goes off

To get back to normal operation I have to turn the CA93 CA63 off and on at the power switch.

I've tried doing a factory reset, but that had no effect.

Just before this problem started the following happened:

I started to record and the display, etc changed as normal. When I stopped recording I pressed 'Stop' and again for 'Play' but there was no sound recorded - just silence.

I tried the same thing again a number of times - always with the same result. I then did a factory reset following which the record function ceased to operate at all (see above).

Does anyone have any ideas?

John_B, are you attempting to record a song to the internal memory or MP3/WAV audio to a USB memory device?

In addition, if a USB memory device is connected, does the same problem occur when the device is disconnected?

Kind regards
James

James,

Sorry, I should have said that I was trying to record to the internal memory.

I have never before tried recording to a USB stick but have just tested it out. Everything went fine until the question "Save to USB (No/Yes)". I pressed the right 'arrow' button and left it a while, but the system seemed to hang (no response from the buttons and no sound).

The record functionality is buggy. I have experienced a similar problem but mine was corrected after off/on.

My idea is that you either have a CA63 or a CA93 or both wink

Whoops - a typo I'm afraid. 'CA93' should have been 'CA63'.

Thanks, I've now corrected it.

John_B, just to clarify one point, am I correct in thinking that the song recorder was functioning correctly, but that the problem you describe has arisen in the past few days?

May I also please ask you to try storing a sound to one of the Registration memories, and also to try storing the panel settings to the User Memory (pages pp.23 and pp.53 of the owner's manual respectively), and confirm that this functionality of the instrument is working correctly.

Finally, can you please confirm that you are using the latest software (v.106) by holding the ORGAN, HARPSI&MALLETS, and STRINGS buttons while turning on the instrument.

Kind regards,
James

KawaiJames, I can also confirm that the record function is buggy. Most of the time, after inserting a USB stick, the first record won't start correctly and hangs after a few seconds, regardless of whether using a slow/high performance USB stick or WAV/MP3 recording. This is quite annoying.

I'm no longer bothering about this since I only record things every month or so.

James,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Yes, the (internal) record was working perfectly and the problem only developed in the last few days.

I will test out your suggestions and post my findings later today.

James,

Thank you so much for your help.

I checked the software and it was version 1.03. So I downloaded 1.06 and updated the CA63 software.

The problem disappeared after doing that.

Perhaps the original software had become corrupted in some way. It is always possible that there was a spike in the mains power which the CA63 disliked. Which raises the question - in the unlikely event of such a thing happening in the future, can one 'upgrade' the software in the CA63 to the same version as already present?

Hello John_B,

I'm glad to hear that updating to the latest software version has resolved the recorder problem. The v1.06 update was initially prepared to fix a problem with the string resonance implementation (originally reported by mucci), and looking at the changelog doesn't appear to contain any recorder-related fixes.

However, as you suggest, it could be that the instrument's flash memory had become corrupted in some way, and that simply updating the software also flushed-out this part of the memory. I don't believe there are any restrictions to the software updater, so it should be possible to repeat the v1.06 update even if the instrument is already running this OS. Ill try to clarify both points on Monday.

Kind regards,
James

mucci, may I ask if you would consider re-running the v1.06 update to see if this resolves the issue?

Kind regards,
James
