Hi everyone, I'm about to buy my first piano. I'm interested in "last year's models" and used ones to get the best bang for the buck. However, it's hard to find not-too-old used digital pianos. The previous models are already quite rare, too, so trying them all myself before buying is out the question.

I know that Roland HP-203 and HP-302 should have roughly the same feel due to PHA-II with escapement. The latter has "natural sound" but inferior speakers (typically I use headphones, though). Is it worth 200 - 300 € more? Is the sound in HP-203 expressive compared to Yamaha 300 series, for exaple? And, was there ever a consensus on whether the HP-201 sold in Europe had PHA-II or not?

I could get a used Yamaha CLP-230 for 1000 €, but it seems a little overpriced considering it has only 1-layer samples. I assume it is significantly less expressive due to this fact. However, I like the Yamaha sound and it does have GH3, although I'm not sure I would notice the difference. I guess I would be better off with a new CLP-320 (1150 €) despite its plain GH.

I'm trying to resist the temptation to try the Kawai CA-63, considering it costs 600 € more than any of the above... but I'm used to a certain old Kawai upright with *really* heavy keys.

A little off topic: I wonder why the manufacturers insist on building these full-frame digital pianos. Using proper software, I could just use a simple MIDI keyboard without any knobs at all, but I'm unable to find one with a good keyboard.

If it was between the HP203 or HP302, it the HP302 for sure, plus the cabinet is nicer, the sound engine is much better.

Between the CLP-230 and CLP-320, I suppose you would be fine with the previous model. The changes for the current model is not huge if max bang for buck is your priority.

olavi, if you are considering a used CLP-230 for 1000 €, may I suggest you also consider a new Kawai CN23.

Kind regards,
James
