Just bought a Hailun 178. I had been trying out a Hailun 161, but it sold this morning before I got to the store. So, the dealership made me a deal on the Hailun 178 that sounds even better. [love the sound, love the feel] Now, I need to get the remodeling crew to hurry up and get the new "music room" completed. I have taken before pictures, so I'll post the after as soon as I get the grand. (Hopefully by end of week or early next week.)

Picking out a piano has been the most challanging purchase I have EVER made. Thanks to all at PW for advice and help!!

Congrats!

I just bought mine too just a few weeks ago, and I've literraly been playing it for about two hours a day. It's a real pleasure to play and most days I have to make myself stop in order to make time to eat dinner and sleep. Lol, so far I haven't had a moment of buyers remorse. Hailun really is a great piano for the money.

Thanks for sharing and can't wait to see your before afters!

Congratulations, JD! Good luck with the renovation, and I hope they finish on time. It's hard to be patient waiting for a piano delivery. grin

You mean you've started this thread all excited but you don't have it yet?
Bummer, but I know how you feel.

Myself, I'm planning on waiting until my HG-198 arrives before I start my thread. laugh
Gotta finish my renovations first.

Congratulations!

The 178 grand has become a particularly successful piano for Hailun. [ We sold 2 of them last weekend....]

Customers seem to be attracted to this piano as it packs great power with an interesting blend of American-Euro tone colour.

Enjoy!

Norbert smile

Congrats! Looks just like my HG178. Norbert is correct, the prop stick is in the cup for the half-open position. Just remember that the stick should be perpendicular to the lid when it is in the right cup.

Hop/ Norbert;
Is that for fear it will slip out or break or is it to prevent warpage to the lid?

Thanks for catching that.

It's for feat of slipage. The biggest fear is that someone accidentally bumps the piano, then there's a good chance the lid will come slamming down. Might result in an injured hand or damage to the piano. I don't think hard playing would knock it out of that cup but one never knows.

Congrats on the piano again! Glad your wait's finally over! smile

You should read the article in Piano Buyer entitled "How to Make a Piano Room Sound Grand". It will lead you to better sounding placement alternatives.

Congrats on buying a very fine piano.

Less likely to slip out.

BTW, after the first few weeks I kept the lid closed, with the front piece folded back (so that I could use the music desk). That keeps the dust out, and moderates the volume slightly. If I didn't use printed music, I would be tempted to keep it totally closed, but I only totally close it when I am away for a week or more.

Thanks to all. I love playing it. Anything I play sounds so much better. Thanks for all the advice on the lid etc.. I'll read the article on how to make the room sound grand.

J.D.,
now that you've had the Hailun for some time, how's it
working out?

Also, what have you done to the room? I am seriously
contemplating putting marble into my living room (its marble and
carpet now...going all marble) or...could do hardwood.

I wonder how nasty all marble would be with a piano? I have
thick curtains and some furnature which would stay in the
room.

Thanks and congrats.

I have all wood and I need to get me a rug! If you go all hard surface you might find the sound to be extra "live" and piercing! Not necessarily a good thing.

Birdstew.
Still love the Hailun. However, I have a data point of one in the grand piano world. I only have had a couple of minor issues that were quickly corrected during the in home tuning. (squeaky unachord pedal and one damper not engaging all the time) These were certainly not factory defects, but just action parts that needed a quick adjustment. Not one key has ever stuck.
We put new hardwood floors and new curtains. There is not any room for furniture so that's about it. We did put in double french doors, so I can open them up to let the sound out.

Gnuboi is absolutely right about the rug. I have a rug underneath the soundboard otherwise the sound overpowers the room. Marble would be worse, so I would recommend a nice rug to go under the piano. [I checked out a used Yamaha G3 in an room with ceramic tile flooring and it was painfully bright!]

Thick curtains and furniture certainly help, but you'll probably still need a rug on hard wood or marble. Be sure to read "How to make your room sound Grand" in The Piano Book for placement advice.
