Hi everyone,

I made a thread a while back about my audition. I think I'm going to do Chopin's Etude Op.25 No.7 in C# minor (my favourite piece, and I can play it pretty well). Now I need a Prelude and Fugue from Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, something which lasts about 4 - 5 minutes. I also need a mid-tempo 20th Century piece, which also lasts about that.

Regards,

Samuel

Purpose of audition? Other examples of your rep so we can judge difficulty?

What preludes and fugues have you played previously?

What 20th century works are you already familiar with?

G minor from WTK I is beautiful and has a 4-voice fugue. As for 20th century, without knowing anything else about what "20th century" means for you, Bartok's Allegro Barbaro would seem to fit the bill.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

My rep, that Chopin Etude, a bunch of his Nocturnes. Mozart K331, and K330, Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.3, Beethoven's Moonlight and Pathetique Sonatas etc.
In 100% honesty... none. You could call me ignornant, but I really don't enjoy Baroque muisc. I mainly play Classical and Romantic.

How about Bach's Prelude and Fugue No. 6 from the Well-Tempered Clavier (book II)? The prelude is especially badazz. The set meets your time limit.

Gould playing the prelude:

For the modern piece, how about a Scriabin Prelude? I am not extremely familiar with them, however, the few I have heard are excellent pieces. A simple Youtube search will give you a list of the more popular ones.

Depending on the purpose of the audition and the direction in which you expect it to take you, and while you may not "like" Baroque music, you may be required to play a considerable amount of it in the future. It might not be a bad idea to start getting some selections of "basic Baroque" into your fingers.

With hundreds of piano pieces that are 20th Century works, it's pretty difficult to make any suggestions, not knowing what you might like. I think it should be up to you to start doing some listening of 20th Century piano music and decide which might best appeal to you.

What are your teacher's suggestions?

Regards,
