It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
I didn't mean to open the bar that early in the morning, but I logged in to submit my recital and decided to post my monthly bar contribution at the same time.
While I was working on the piece for the recital, I came up with some melody that I like but did not fit in the other piece so I kept it for the bar. I don't know what to name it. So here it is

I made a recording for the bar myself, but my laptop kinda messed up the sound. I might either place it further away from the piano next time, to see if it gets any better. If not, I'll record it from my digital piano instead, which seems to work fine.
Anyway, I will at least wait 'till Tuesday, when my acoustic gets tuned. (and voiced, if my technician has time for that before his next appointment)
This is a song by Leonard Cohen, probably one of my favorites. It's "Famous Blue Raincoat" and for me is about the epitome of forgiveness and how love and hate can be so intertwined. (Not surprising since it's from his "Love and Hate" album.) some of my famous lines go..
"So what can I tell you, my brother my killer. What can I possibly say. I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you, I'm glad you stood in my way. And if you ever come by here, For Jane or for me. Well your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free. And thanks for the trouble you took from her eyes. I thought it was there for good, so I never tried."
Ah truebeginner and Peyton - it's so nice to get to hear a piano bar when there's still a listenable number of entries Yours were great. tb - yours remeinded me of someone, but I can't put my finger on who. Pretty melody , though. Well done. Peyton - it's only been say the last year or so that I even heard of Leonard Cohen - I don't get out much - but you have the perfect style for his stuff, and I love your piano backings. Great piece.

Thanks guys! Yes, I guess you could say it's my own arrangement, no sheet music, just by ear.. Frankly I don't think anyone can top LC singing it on the Love and Hate album.
Back to Bach for me this month. Just nothing else is quite ready for recording.
Bach's Prelude in C Major (from Well Tempered Clavier) was mentioned on the forum recently and I thought it would make a nice "short" piece to work on. My summer substitute teacher agreed but stipulated that I needed to work on a more Baroque interpretation as well as a "modern" one. Well, I'm giving you the modern one because I like it much better. It's a little more introspective - and you can clearly hear what gave Gounod inspiration for his Ave Maria.

Andy - BWV846 was my first-ever recital piece and just recently, too. You played it very well. So simple, yet so subtle are the changes throughout. I very much enjoy playing it weekly. Thanks for sharing it!

My piece this month is "Freddie Freeloader", by Miles Davis. (Why can't jazz songs have dignified titles, like "Rhapsodic Etude: Theme and Variation in C Sharp Minor" or something along those lines? Even the titles that start out sounding dignified soon turn otherwise, like "Concerto For Cootie".) I was actually thinking about giving this a dignified name and sneaking it into the recital (kind of like the Marx brothers sneaking into a society party!), but I went with another song for the recital. Anyway, this is a basic blues song in F, with one chord being different from the usual blues chord progression.
I am playing the piano, but the drums and bass are provided by a backing track that was provided to me. I am playing from a lead sheet.
I'm really enjoying all the recordings this month! True Beginner: Great chords and melody! Very creative. Peyton: Wish I could sing half as well - very nice! Andy: Beautiful Bach! Rick: Love your bluesy style - you always make it look so easy. Glen: You really did a great job with this golden oldie - like the way you jazzed it up! Ed: You sound like a whole jazz band - do you play with one? You have perfect rhythm. Lots of fun to listen to.

Rickster, I did not read thoroughly and expected the old Platters song. Quite a nice surprise to find this new blues instead. Had to go back and read more carefully. I do love me some blues. Very fun song!
Ed, that's a pretty sweet Freddie Freeloader. I must confess to not being a big Davis fan (heresy, I will admit), but this is a piece I've always liked, and you did it up right. Nice blowing, as the jazz cats used to say.

They have great melody and meaningful words not like the stuff I heard on radio today (like Ke$ha and Gaga ) Andy: I love the simplicity in your playing. I heard this piece before but this is the first time it makes me want to learn to play it Rich: You are a pro. You can play any type of music but Blues fits you best. Glen: That is very relaxing piece. I can sit at the bar all night to listen to that type of music. Ed: I haven't heard this piece before but I enjoyed it a lot. Bill: Great playing as usual. BILL - Another great Simon song! I found myself singing along - you're right, it tells a great story. One of those (like almost all the Beatles' songs) that I know all the words to. Just wonderful accompaniment!
Glen and Ed - two really really nice laid-back tunes this morning - a little toe-tapping, a mellow mood before a too-busy day. Thanks! They were great.

Thanks - I'm glad you liked it. I got the lyrics and chords from a guitar book of Simon and Garfunkel songs. I improvised the fills and the rest of the piano accompanyment by ear.

GLEN-Nice work on the Beethoven! It's a real finger stretcher. It's the last piece I worked on before starting in on the jazz. I could never get the whole Adagio down smoothly.

Oldtimers (namely, me) are fond of saying some piece of music has brought back old memories. Well, this one really did, especially since you mentioned playing it on an organ. Here is a recording of yours truly playing this song on a Hammond Organ in (hold onto your hat) 1979!
Pedals are fun aren't they? My organ recordings were made with a $10 cassette recorder, sitting on the floor, using the cheapest cassette tapes from Kmart, so there is an excessive amount of ooh pah pah, and a bit of hiss. But that's ok, covers up the mistakes!
I've been on sort of a Paul Simon jag lately. This is a piano/vocal cover of his song America. I really like the lyrics and the story that he tells. ...

Yes, the saddest scene I've ever seen in a movie was Beethoven with his ear down on the piano as he played, trying desperately to hear it.
Those silly pages never listen to me :P Sometimes turning the page is harder than playing the music! Sighs =)

Ed, you sure lose the bass with those cheap cassette recorders, huh? That recording is the epitome of fun. I remember about that time, I heard what I thought was the most amazing jazz set ever at a local jazz party. Ruby Braff on cornet with Dick Hyman on the Hammond. They only played about three or four pieces, and I cannot recall what they were, but the audience was definitely wowed. I sure wish I had a recording of that night. I remember Hyman played an introduction to the first piece that sounded like something from an old Bela Lugosi film. Very ominous. He brought the house down. We were literally rolling with laughter. Then they got serious and blew us all away.

Ed - I loved Tico Tico played on that Hammond! It sounds to me like you are having a ball with it - throwing in some fantastic syncopations - what a gas!

Glen, another of my favorites. Strangely enough, the first time I heard this song was on the same night as the Ruby Braff/Dick Hyman performance I mentioned in a previous post. A lesser known singer called Sue Raney was on the bill, and this was one of the songs she performed that night. Wow, what a performance!! I've loved this song ever since.

That was from the Rhumba rhythm setting on my Roland there - All the rhythms have the flashing lights that I try to pay attention to and play along with (not always too successfully). It was fun to use it with Tico Tico, though.
It's great to play along with the different rhythms, Latin, Swing, etc.. sort of like playing with a little band.

I really enjoyed that Schumann, I didn't know this piece, but it sounds strangely familar, similar to something. Then the penny dropt...isn't it: "O Iesu Mawr"?
Yes, Elssa, that recording was really bad. The playing, though, was quite nice. I think that your bad recording captured a bit more of the bass than did Ed's.
Thanks, Dennis. Yes, I remember I had a loud bass setting on with the pedals for that one. Too bad I didn't have my Zoom H2 recorder back then, though. Maybe I'll redo it now.. still have that same organ.

Augustina, nice work on Simple Gifts. I've grown very fond of that tune because of the version that Aaron Copeland incorporated into "Appalachian Spring". Someone extracted the Simple Gifts section and posted in on Youtube here:

Elssa, holy cow, I used to play Brazil too, and in a style not unlike yours! Great listening!
OK, here are a couple of recordings I resurrected. On this one you can hear how much I liked to work in a lot of tension and drama:
Again, the recording quality was very poor. I tried to do a bit of equalization with Audacity, but I don't think it helped much. All the lower tones seem to get mixed into a generic blob of sound, so the pedal and LH have a rhythmic effect, but the individual tones are often hard to make out.
Wow, you sound like a real pro on the organ, Ed! Loved the way you played "Jealousy" - very vivacious! That was always one of my favorites, though I never played it on organ. "My Funny Valentine" was terrific, too - very smooth runs & fills, cool counter-melodies, etc.
Got any more recordings around? Lady of Spain? I think your sound quality is better than mine. Encore!

Ed & Elssa, I am enjoying all the organ pieces. Cumaná was especially nice. I like a bit of Latin flavor in the morning. I had better since I married a Cubana.
Larry, I wonder if you used a different mic placement or set the recording level differencty or something? That recording sure has the "digital" sound to my ears, but what do I know? Not much, evidently.
Dennis, yes, I frequently experiment with mic placement and recording levels. If I can't get it the way I like it, I may have to break down and buy some better mics.
This was my original selection for this past ABF recital until it was superseded by Danny Elfman. It was recorded just before the recital submission process began, but the video was not edited until just recently because of my procrastination.
Not an award winning performance by any means, but I'm just happy to have recorded it and be finally done with this.

TX-Dennis Thank you Dennis. The hidden story of this video is that this recording was just meant to be a sound test. I was setting the video stuff and I sat on the piano just to check whether the sound levels were correct. I had not even rolled up the stores to provide some decent light. And, voila! I went on playing and I happened to like it once I finish.
After that first test, where I was playing without the pressure of the red dot, I tried for a couple of hours to record a version with more light to improve the video quality. I failed once and again and eventually I decided to settle on the first video, the one that was not meant to be recorded.
That red dot is powerful indeed.

CMohr: Thank you very much indeed. I felt frustrated ---limited frustration though, this is meant to be a hobbie--- when I was not able to meet the deadline for the last recital. I had worked through the most difficult fragments of the invention but I could not play well enough the last bars, which are not particularly hard but those former difficult fragments took too much time to be able to submit a decent recording. A few hours before the time limit I strived to get a decent recording but the pressure made me fail once and again on the last bars. Bitterly, the next morning I could play those last bars well enough to attempt a submission, but it was late then.
I'm happy to see this bar open 24/7 so I can share with all of you the results of so much work. It was tough to get that invention on the fingers. There's a lot of work yet to polish it though.

Hola, mcasl! Isn't is great that the AB forum has the piano bar? The recitals do put added pressure on us, but still fun. I just wish I had more pieces well in hand so I could join the piano bar more often. I'm glad you put yours here for all of us to hear!

Yes, I decided to subject myself to more self abuse and am working on Clementi's No. 3 from his Op. 36. The powers that be declared it the same difficulty as No. 2, so I'll see how that goes. Thanks again!
This is a piece I'm learning for a recital my teacher wants me to play, right now is too difficult to me, and you'll notice tons of mistakes and wrong notes, but it will improve in time
To celebrate the fact that I can now play again, I recorded a simple classical piece that I learned as a youngster. The doctor told me that I can now play piano, "but no Rachmaninoff." I've only worked on this for a couple of days, so it's not perfect. Please forgive the clipping on the loud bit.

Oh, sorry Dennis, I didn't put the composer's name! Mazurkas are usually a Chopin thing, I don't know if much more people after him (or even before) wrote so many mazurkas.
Anyway, about finish it, I think it will be not possible . What I mean is: this is by far the most challenging piece I ever learnt in terms of expression. Of course to hit the notes correctly is also pretty difficult. But, the thing is: if you play exactly what is written the piece sounds kind of dull. You need to add a lot of "you" in this piece, and every single recording of this piece I've heard is different in a lot of expresion details: rubinstein, pletnev, horowitz, Lupati, etc, etc, etc, all of them play it in a different and very particular way (of course it is true to any piece, but the differences are bigger on this one).
So, I don't think in terms of "finishing it". It is really a lifetime thing. I always play it differently and I didn't find "me" on this piece yet. But, of course, in terms of correct technique, I hope to "finish" it soon enough!
TXDennis - I'd never heard that tune before. & you made it sound so beautiful, I went to IMSLP & downloaded the score. Though it'll be years before I can play it as well as you.
Thanks for the comments Bill, joyoussong, and al-mahed. The finger isn't fully healed. I still have to wear the splint for work, but I can take it off at home unless I am lifting heavy objects - so it's definitely on the mend.
al-mahed, yes, this is my Kawai GE-30 baby grand (5'5"). I had the recording level set a bit too high and caused a bit of clipping on the loudest part.
