I brought a brand new Yamaha U1 four weeks ago for $5500.00. This price includes 6.5% sales tax. The dealer said that he had only this one U1 left in his warehouse and he wanted to give me the best price and I think this is really a good deal. After it was delivered to my house, I called Yamaha USA trying to find out the date of its manufacture. The customer service told me that this U1 should be manufactured within 3 years but the exact manufacture date is not available, he does not have the information. I asked him when this date will be available and his answer is: "three years from now". He also told me that the dealer who sold me this U1 has not registered it. Both his answers confused me. Why the date of manufacture of this U1 is not availabe now, why I need to wait 3 years in order to know the manufacture date ? Does it matter whether a dealer registers a piano, any impact on the consumer ?

Many of the serial number guide books and sites are always a couple of years behind.

If you bought from an authorized new Yamaha dealer, and it says "new" on your paperwork you are just fine.

You got a great deal. Why are you second guessing yourself and your dealer after the fact?

It is not uncommon for new boxed units to sit at Yamaha for several weeks or even months. Then they may sit at Yamaha USA in Buena Park, CA for several weeks or months. Then some larger dealers may have them in their warehouses for weeks or months. It is quite possible that a new U1 delivered in January 09 could have been finished at the factory in September 07 or earlier. There is no model year on pianos like cars. They are either new or used. Yours is new.

The date should be on the action frame.
First two numbers on the wippen rail on the treble side should be the year of manufacture. If you have not had your warranty tuning, when the technician arrives have the tech look at it for you.

Strange that Yamaha USA does not have an answer for you.

What's the serial number?

Bear in mind that the date stamp on the action rail doesn't necessarily equal the date of manufacture of the piano. Just as the finished piano can sit in storage, so can a completed action before it's put in a piano.

As Marty said, if you bought from an authorised dealer and your paperwork says "new" you should be fine.

Cheers,
Greg
