Hi all,

I've made a very short piece of jazzy sort of music.

You can listen the recording here.

The intro ain't that jazzy, but the rest is.
I've never really played jazz before and I therefore don't have a clue of what notes to play. I would like to receive some feedback on things I should learn, maybe appropriate scales or something?
I ask this because I'm having a hard time finding jazz I like. A lot of jazz is just too "modern" for me, or well, I don't think it's music anymore. So I'm having a hard time "copying" styles as well, and I would therefore like to know which jazz scales etc. are suitable for jazz I like (which is the kind'a jazz I recorded above).

Hey, that's good. A lot of beginner jazz players have a kind of corny, stilted sound, but you have a good time feel that will get even better, and that's the most important thing.

Thank you for the compliment TromboneAl. With "Time feel" you mean like the ear for tempo or something?
Are there any comments on the actual notes played? Have I missed and/or skipped some essential jazz notes for example? It's in the key of F and the chords are: F A Dm G C F

Hey Snake,

Is Louis Armstrong too modern for you?
or Lester Young?

If not, those are great guys to copy to get started with Jazz. Louis in particular will play tunes similar to the changes you played. And he will demonstrate how to solo on them. Listen to him and learn to sing his trumpet solos.

The comment about music not being music anymore is simply your ear not being used to music that developed over a period of a hundred year. Learning the foundation, you can easily smooth yourself into modern jazz, which uses and builds upon the foundation of Louis, Prez, Charlie Bird Parker, and many others.

Thank you very much. I'm going to listen to a couple of albums from Louis Armstrong. I'll keep that transcription link in my mind, but prefer figuring things out myself. It's a good learning experience. smile

Thank you again.
