No worries. Yes, that's the piano in the CL ad. My customer went to see it and took some photos of his own to show me. The DIY'er owner came up with that contraption on his own.

Oh, and here's a shot of the quality of his restringing:

Look at the coils and the becketts.

Aargh! I'm surprised he didn't weld the coils to the pins to make sure the "piano" was always in tune.

It is missing a few things, but hey, what do you expect for $500?! At least it is the anniversary model. That has to be worth something.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chickering-Anniv...=item4d11d5dcd7

"This is a Chickering Anniversary model grand piano. It does not have legs, pedals, or music desk. Other small things may be missing as well. I do have the top and fallboard. The top is in good shape other than one hinge being torn loose. The fallboard has a piece broken off but is repairable. The piano is 5' 7" . Overall this piano is fairly rough, but repairable. I am not sure the serial number, it is my understanding these were only made in 1926."

Hmmm..."needs to be tuned..." Does the definition of "tuning" include replacing several broken strings and major repairs to the action?

If you wanted to value a piano based on a signature, why not at least forge the signature of some interesting person?

"In great shape for its age" is always a good one! If you interpret "great" as just "big" I suppose it is in accurate description.

Looks like a parlor organ that someone converted into an upright. Not a bad idea at all, really.

It's a Janssen "Modeska". It was in the PTJournal last month or the month before.

This one was a link from a craigslist ad. His "refinishing" job is something to see, AND he'll be happy to do the same to your piano for "$1000 - $2000."

Seems like he's knowlegeable, he could tell it's a "formal" grand and has all that technical lingo down ("tuning knobs").

And thought you all might benefit from his advice on how to move and set up pianos. smile

"Walla!"

He would have gotten better results if he'd used a roller...

I'm glad he patched up the small dings in the music desk. Otherwise, it might look like someone used 30 or so sledge hammers on it. And who needs matching casters if you can balance a piano on two boxes?

Well, it is kind of cool, but I would be worried about buzzes and rattles from the storage annex.

The dried lacquer running down the side is a nice touch too.

So he pays me $2,000 to be allowed to do this to my piano?
