Since the top of the ad only says "1950 upright baldwin piano. - $1 (las vegas)" I wouldn't bother him with offering $75 for such an expensive piano either.

Seems like every week or so, I see a piano for sale with a metal soundboard. I've still not seen a piano with a metal soundboard in my work. Perhaps someday, I will see this phenomenon in person.

I think it was Challis that made harpsichords with metal soundboards.

Do you think these people are so out of it that they think the plate is the sound board?

Absolutely.

That piano looked like someone slapped a coat of brown paint on it for good measure...

Yes. I find that this is a very common confusion, actually. One would think that the words "metal" and "board" would be somewhat mutually exclusive, but apparently that detail is lost on some people.

I remember someone talking to me recently that had taken apart a piano (I don't recall the reason and probably don't want to) and talked about how heavy the cast iron "soundboard" was.

They are not really "out of it" overall, they are just out of their element when it comes to understanding what a piano is made of and how it works. I am a very knowledgeable vehicle repair shop owner (and a half-assed piano tinkerer) so I am in my element when it comes to understanding vehicle mechanics and I know enough about pianos to know that it is a piece of wood that resonates and projects sound from a piano string.

We all have areas where we are out of our element and areas where we are in our element. There are many areas where I would be as naive or more so than someone who thinks a piano plate is its soundboard.

Blues Beater,

This is a humor thread to make fun of those who are totally pianovoidistic. It's a real disease.

I understand. Wasn't meaning to preach, just reflecting on how people can be very knowledgeable and shrewd in one area and clueless in another. I would be out of my element as a preacher, anyway! grin

This really is a joke. It looks like charms for a charm bracelet. Nice. But not at that price.

Here's a very cool music room:

http://southjersey.craigslist.org/msg/4237556407.html

Nothing funny about the piano, but the placement of the gong is awesome! I would only buy the piano if they came as a set.

Awesome Zeno! Is the gong for an extra special effect at the end of a big piece, or is it used as a form of self-evaluation when one is unhappy with a particular performance? Maybe this is Chuck Barris' piano??

Not really funny but looks like a pretty good cabinet restoration. I'm guessing a birdcage action behind the panel. Amazing amount of scroll work. Whats that white fluffy stuff behind it?

Kirkman was a rival to Broadwood, going back to the days of harpsichords.
