So watch this one. Some of the language is a bit colourful. Do you think this guy gets any calls for tuning??

I've seen this ad posted regularly for at least six months now, but I always thought it was a joke.

I'm suspicious because the tuning price is extremely low for NYC, and it's also difficult to believe that a tech would try to drum up business in this manner. But then again, it IS New York, and there are a ton of crazy people here who might be really into it.

YIKES... even though he is almost certainly joking, I think I'd be really nervous having such a cretin touch my piano. All the techs I know are very polite and cultured. That kind of ad is absurd.

OT. It makes me remember...

I was seeing old family pictures with my elder sun Erik, at this time he was 6 years old.

We came to a picture of his grandpa when he was maybe 12/13 years old.

Erik exclaimed: Look, it's me when I was bigger!

Considering the supposed history of this piano, I would be verrrrry cautious of what might be lurking inside that makes it 'funky.' Ewwww. http://reno.craigslist.org/msg/1893007501.html

If I recall correctly from the book Blues People by Leroy Jones, the original meaning of the word "funky" is a smell arising from activities of the type the Mustang Ranch promoted. Thus, a completely accurate description using an otherwise adapted word.
And again, ewwww.

I don't necessarily have links to post right now.... but what kind-of annoys me a bit (and is amusing/funny at the same time too), are misrepresented listings, like...
Grand piano ... and it's a "Grand" spinet.
full size upright piano ... a spinet
57" upright piano ... a console or spinet that probably happens to be 57" wide
a piano with a tall piano case... and it has the guts of a spinet. (I actually saw one of these at a store a few years back, and I may have seen others.)
piano .... and it's an organ, or an inexpensive electronic keyboard (like one of the Casios or Yamahas with 61 or fewer keys)
Also I don't exactly like it when some of the wrong keywords are used, like listing "yamaha steinway baldwin" or other brand names at the bottom of the listing when the piano is none of those brands.
...then the ones I miss out on, due to misspelled listings (so my search doesn't turn them up), misplaced listings (I generally only search under musical instruments when I'm looking for pianos), etc, can be a bit irksome.

The deal with that piano is, after you get that piano into the US you have to have the legs 'inspected' by some guys the seller knows in the US.

Also, the 'ivory' keytops will be replaced by the same guys.

Amazing price, though!
grin grin wink

(And, ideal for rock stars on the road -- all they need is a little razor blade to scrape the key tops!)

Seriously, though, it's funny when the commas and zeros get mixed up. When I bought my Baldwin R, which was advertised as 1,500 dollars, I hesitated for a moment when I took out my money and thought "I hope he didn't actually mean to write 15,000." Thankfully, he didn't.

There was a semi-concert Kawai for sale recently in San Francisco for something like 2-3k. I think they really meant the price, since the ad sounded like they had bought a building where it was located, and they just wanted to get rid of it. (Also, the ad didn't last very long.)

Here's a piano that looks like a big boat:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/msg/1966866456.html

It's an interesting find for someone with the resources to restore. I didn't know Bluethner made a symmetrical grand, and certainly not one so large. I wonder what it looks like inside.

There's a guy in the UK that sells many pianos, under lots of different ID's which are easy to spot. Quite entertaining ads including videos playing pianos with a gorgeous blonde!

Also odd how some of his customers seem to sell piano occasionally too ... mmm ...

Trancera, 'entertaining' isn't necessarily the word I would use to describe that eBay posting. I'm thinking 'schizophrenic' might be more apt. Wow, that was weird!

I did a Lester spinet elbow job the other day. A few of them had been replaced, so in all it had 4 types of elbows in it. I replaced them all to end up with a matching set.

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm considering refusing to do anymore elbow jobs, as I just don't think the pianos are worth it. Does anyone else still do these?

They would not be bad pianos if the elbows held up. I sell the elbows to handy owners and they can fix them if they feel up to it. Not all of them have plastic elbows.

There are also some real odd-ball individuals who advertize on CL.
For example, I just saw this ad reappear on CL after several months….

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/eat/msg/2075219362.html

Several months ago, I saw this exact same ad on CL and I was genuinely interested in this particular semi-concert grand piano…

When I emailed the owner and gave him my cell phone number, he called and we discussed the piano. When I asked to schedule a time to look at the piano, he said I needed to prove to him that I was who I said I was and provide him with a land-line phone number and my address. When I complied, he wanted to know if I had the money in my bank account to buy the piano. I assured him that I did have the money to buy it if I decided I wanted it after I looked at it and played it.

Then, he said he would not schedule a time for me to look at it unless I agreed to buy it first. I told him that was an unreasonable request because I had not seen it or played it yet. He said he would contact me again and never did. I guess he changed his mind about selling and removed his ad and I never heard from him again.

Now, his ad, almost identical to the one several months ago, is back on CL.

There are some weird ones out there….

Oh, and by-the-way, I did find a wonderful older Yamaha C7 that I’m absolutely thrilled with… but I didn’t fine it on CL. I guess divine providence was looking after me in the first place…

Take care,

Rick

The pianos are worthless if the elbows aren't replaced. So, yes, I will still do these.

I kinda like doing them. I replace them right in the clients piano - It takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.

Who are you to say whether it is worth it or not? I see my job is to offer service to my client. If they want the piano to work and are willing to pay me, I'll do the work. I'm not here to pass judgement on their taste in instruments.

The only reason I might refuse is if the piano had too many other problems like rusty strings, splitting bridges, loose tuning pins, worn out action etc. But some of these little piano aren't in too bad a shape and with some TLC people can get some enjoyment out of them.

Wonder where the drums are at in this piano? Wonder where they got replacement drums for it?

Nice decal though. Those drums you speak of would be the much-sought- after invisible ones......that everyone looks for but can never find……

The decal should be nice considering it was made from 14 quarts of gold!

Why in the hell would anybody want a gold decal hidden under the top lid? And $4,000 - are these people insane? Or is it so common to find idiots on craigslist that anything is worth a go? (we don't have a craigslist in OZ)

Craigslist is a minefield of all sorts of used goods. Decals were put in all sorts of un-seen places on pianos in North America including the back of uprights here in Canada.

Yes, I was being sarcastic there, but not very clear. I was disgusted that the seller would try to pass off a cheap decal as gold, in addition to the price of an old clunker at $4000. I guess craigslist is just a big market free-for-all with no rules.

Craigslist took over for most of the used goods for sale in print media, like the Buy/Sell we have here or the auto/truck trader.
Like any used good it is always buyer beware on Craiglist, Kijiji, or any of the paid sites like Ebay.

One can find a lot of over priced goods of all sorts there. I am surprised that you don’t have a craigslist or similar in OZ.
Type in Craigslist and choose a city in America or Canada. Then you can browse all of the crap too….

I guess we do, they just aren't that big by comparison. Craigslist is so infamous the name has entered the popular vernacular - even here in Australia. The closest thing we have would be "Gumtree", but it's really tiny and doesn't have a reputation like Craigslist. It's quite respected actually. It's mostly eBay in OZ.

Gumtree is the same as Kijiji that we have in Canada

I found my piano on Gumtree UK.

Looked at a few, the last two being suitable. Cost more to move of course than to buy.

In a way the experience helped, I quickly learned what a really BAD piano looked, felt and sounded like. "Its got a good Iron frame" ... which it did have, it also had a nice birdcage and 250 very different notes smile

I'm delighted with the modest piano I now have.

I don't know if anyone else will find this humorous, but I know I did... Apparently the sounds of the player piano are not quite as popular as it used to be. This family decided to put a stereo on top of their player piano. Which, by the way, you can buy on Craigslist for $500...

Wow. You know what the best part is about that listing? Is when they say "All that is needed is a little touch up can easily be resold for 2x the amount asking". In that case... I'll Take It!

Sorry for OT (as not listed on craisglist but ebay)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290532070438&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Astonishing. Now a new owner for 799 USD only.

Ran in the minimum two rounds in ebay.com. A Steinway Square, falsely set on the timeline as it is never a serial no. 3113 but probably an 31130 or 31131 or.. or 31139, last figure omitted by error. So built in 1875. Of the first series of the very last version of Steinway squares, full compass w. 88 keys.

There were squares w. 82 keys CC to a4(?), 1853 to any around 1860, then 85 keys, AAA to a4 (?), built 1860 to 1875, and starting 1875 the last versions w. 88 full keys, AAA to c5(?). This item belonging to the last series, built from 1875 to 1889.

So one of the first examples of the last series. Playable, with some minor work to the outer carved wood. Sold by auction at an extremely low price. I was very much thinking about it - but Ovid, New York - finger lakes, half way from NYC to the Niagara falls.. In the mddle of Nowhere.. Nice nature, assumed.. But such transportation needs organisation, and Costs to get it to Germany probably additional 2.000 USD...

Pheew.

Congrats to the new owner.

Only 64 keys. Count again. This time use all your toes and fingers.

I wonder if the tone in this is similar to a Memphis Aeolian...the price is certainly right.

This promises to be an interesting discussion.

Ummm, 6 octaves plus four notes. Six time twelve is, uhhhh, 60 + 12 = 72. Add four, ummm, 73, 74, 75, 76! I get 76. Where did I go wrong?

Actually, I can only count to five today so I think I missed an octave. Makes me wonder about myself......Maybe I should check for missing fingers on myself?

I thought maybe Dale is missing four fingers and could only count up to 64 with the remaining 6.
If you post a picture of your hand I'll be happy to count them for you to make sure smile

Here another piano with an unusual amount of keys (52). Or is the owner missing fingers?

I count 88.

That is like the person who cannot afford a full piano tuning, and only wants the white keys tuned.

$8,000.00 Wellington??? I may have one of those still sitting around. Maybe I better touch it up.

These claims—whether they be for piano, houses or cars—always leave me wondering:
”All that is needed is a little touch up [and it] can easily be resold for 2x the amount asking.”

If there was any truth to them at all the seller would be a fool to not have the “little touch up” done and sell it themselves for “2x the amount asking.” I guess they are just looking for some other fool to come along who will believe. Sigh.

It seems that 90% of the pianos on Craigslist are in "excellent shape", and "just needs tuning". Any cosmetic flaws are "easily touched up". A few choice instruments have been "completely gone through". The pricing is usually arbitrary.

Oh, and the lower the price, the more "perfect" they are for a beginner or student.

Little bit off topic, but:
Apparently the Canadian Bell Illimatable action pianos were often painted over including a "Steinway" logo as they sounded as good, if not better, as that, and they would sell for more this way. Dan Silverwood has a nice photo series on this beast. I tuned one recently, the owner didn't know anything about it (a family heirloom) and neither did I at the time, but I was immediately blown away by the impressive sound.

Kawai makes Steinway Pianos vs Kawai makes pianos for Steinway. I feel no sympathy for any confusion that Steinway has caused themselves. I have given up explaining that a Boston piano is not made by Steinway. It reminds me of what we used to say the letters in Pontiac stood for.

So many careless typos... like a recent PianoMart ad for an

And a new one today for an antique 1921 Knabe for only
$2,000,000.

From the Little Rock, AR CRAIGS LIST:

comes with the 4 original legs, and original pedal. speakers work well, as do both 1/4" outputs. feel free to call/text with questions, or to come play it.

Had to chuckle a bit seeing synthesized piano referred to as the "real thing."

A Wurlitzer 200 is an electric piano, not a synth. It uses struck reeds and an electric pick-up to produce it's sound.

Think of them is the piano's version of an electric guitar.

Technically you are correct. Great analogy. But this doesn't alter the fact that it too is not the real thing.

Here's a funny one I saw today in the Nashville Craigslist ads. http://nashville.craigslist.org/msg/2464729796.html
For when this cl listing expires, the ad is for a Lester Low Back Spinner piano. I guess it was the for runner to the Sit and Spin.

Player Piano - $3,000
http://bellingham.craigslist.org/msg/2452798972.html

"I have a late 1800's early 1900's golden solid oak player piano for sale. I have no rolls of music, they have been lost in a long move. Beautifull piece of furniture and works just fine. My Mom has not room in her retirement home for this piano and I don't either. I would love to see somone enjoy it as much as my mother did. If you know anything about players then I would love to hear from you or, you could just buy it. So, So heavy that it is a three man show to mve it. It is on a ground floor and has wheels thank goodness for that. This piano is one of a kind. When I took the picks I did not polish it up so it is dull in the picks If interested parties only would like to see it I can show it to you at your convienence."

I don't think the pictures help out this ad at all.

Sometimes the less said, the better. You can get more interest that way.

One time I had a hard time selling a car on the local "tradio." I gave all the info, and nobody called. So I starting giving less and less info in hopes that someone would call wanting to know more. Still no luck. Finally, I advertised it as a brand new battery with a car attached. Yep, then I was able to sell it!

Baldwin Acrosonic - only $2400. You would think they could have at least thrown in the moving fee.

You guys will like this one:
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/msg/2658035520.html

Quote:
Lowballer excuses and my replies:

1. "I'm tight on cash"...you shouldn't be buying pianos.

2. "I'm a starving college student"...buy ramen and throw in an egg...very filling. Buy a cheap electronic keyboard. Fits better in your Scion or Honda anyway.

3. "I'm retired and on a tight budget"...see lowballer excuse #1.

4. "$1 CASH, today"...I ONLY take cash. You can pay by credit card via paypal but you pay ALL fees and I wait for funds to clear before you take delivery. No money orders, wooden nickels, magic beans or Nigerian wire money transfers for a billion dollars and you give me and extra $50K for my "troubles". Or lotto winnings that you can't get out of the EU for whatever reason.

5. "my Homeboy said this piano is only worth $1"...your homeboy is probably as stupid as you.

6. "my Homeboy said he'll sell me this EXACT same model of piano for $1 but I'd rather buy from you for [insert lowball price but above $1]"...help your homeboy out first or else he might shoot you.

7. "would you consider renting it?"...yes. $1/per day and $1200 non refundable restocking fee.

8. "take a picture of the inside, the bottom, every single key, raise Chopin from the dead to play it, record it, put it on YouTube, get a billion hits, and I'll maybe call you."...no stop wasting my time.

9. "can you meet me halfway between Bakersfield so I can 'look' at it"...see #8.

10. "payment plan?"...yes. ONE payment installment plan. AKA "INSTANT layaway" AKA "cash and carry".

"Prior to my ownership it was the piano that was used in the Old South Church in Weymouth, MA and made it through the fire of 1989. Its notably burnt finish and warm tone is a great addition to any home."

Piano in mint condition by Baldwin. Solid Mahogany case, solid brass sound board. It has been in my family since 1930. It is in perfect condition and very well cared for. It needs tuning.

These folks have ALL the bases covered:

This piano is an upright grand square in working condition and measures 49.5" tall.

Pretty case, though... http://reno.craigslist.org/atq/2677960707.html

Here's a Wellington upright for only.... $5,000.00. I know where a couple of these Wellington uprights are at. Maybe I should latch on to them.

Very heavy. Must pick up.

But I know it's heavy. Do I still have to pick it up?

So, if anyone ever has a question about those unique plastic Irish built pianos that somehow keep surfacing this is what they look like in good condition. With a little tape and glue it could last another owner or two. Sure is enticing at $100.00.

Last tuned in 1948 and still in tune. Only one key needs refelting. all original still plays very LOUD. Please TEXT to...

There is a fellow who used to post here that threw one of these into the bay and it didn’t sink..it floated….
I had one once here in the shop; really difficult to repair when the hammer flanges break away from the rail.

VINTAGE PIANO...CRICKERING UPRIGHT CONSOLE - $300 (OAK RIDGE)

OKAY IT NEEDS TO BE TUNED BUT EVERY PIANO NEEDS TO BE TUNED AFTER IT IS MOVED!?!?!

BEAUTIFUL OLDER WORKING PIANO MADE IN THE UNITED STATES BY THE CRICKERING PIANO COMPANY AND PURCHASED AT KNOXVILLE PIANO COMPANY.

I CAN EMAIL OR TEXT SOME PICTURES OR MEET YOU TO SEE IT IN PERSON. IT IS A CHERISHED PIECE OF HISTORY LOADED WITH GREAT MEMORIES BUT AFTER A DEATH IN OUR FAMILY, WE MUST PART WITH IT.

IT CAN BE MOVED EASILY BECAUSE THERE ARE NO STEPS OUT OF THE HOUSE AND IT SITS WITHIN 10 FEET OF THE EXIT DOOR.
