Probably about when the socket set came out to loosen plate bolts while still strung and under tension. Looks like a good candidate for becoming a piano bookcase.

Seen a few refinished pianos then finding out the "fix a few keys" turn out to be total junk. Maybe if the boat in trade had no keel... that would work!

If you read the writing on the plate, that is exactly what it says: Steinway & Sons New York Hamburg. So it is not as funny as it might seem.
