I stumbled across this website today and really enjoyed looking through it. Thought some of you might too: http://mclellandpiano.homestead.com/HealthyHands.htmlOne of the most eye opening things was the video on students only spreading their fingers as far as is natural. Until now I have had no problem with beginner students placing each finger they are going to use over the notes they are going to play before beginning. I can now see what strain this places on the hand. I love finding these little nuggets!

Until now I have had no problem with beginner students placing each finger they are going to use over the notes they are going to play before beginning. I can now see what strain this places on the hand. I love finding these little nuggets! It's a fine as long as you don't insist on legato.

Try it keyboard klutz. I went straight to my piano after watching the video about that and tried it, and it felt AWFUL. Especially playing a piece using fingers 2,3, and 4 on a group of black keys with all fingers glued to the keys. Even without legato it causes a strain that borders on pain and no doubt would cause pain if playing like that for more than 2 minutes.

At the risk of over-simplifying, the development of keyboard technique began when the touch of the instrument was extremely light, and finger only motion was more than sufficient to produce good tone. As the piano developed, hammers became heavier, along with the double escapement action, more energy from the player was required. Today, we recognize that playing must involve the whole body, not just fingers. But this was recognized long ago as well by such great artists and teachers as Josef Lhevinne, who wrote the seminal text on the subject. Taubman, Golandsky and others are amplifying the basics which Lhevinne expounded.

You're saying you can't play 2,3 and 4 independently and with ease from a standing start? You must be doing something wrong.
