It appears that a certain passage of his famous prelude is impossible to play. how would one play octaves and a 4 finger chord at the same time?

break it, first the c-sharp octaves, then the chords.

So they are played as they are grace notes? That isn't what it sounds like in recordings.

This is because many people play the C sharp octaves a little time before the chords. It's there, just listen closely.
