that was quite the thread at PW a while back when alex Hernandez shared it with us. I fell in love with that piece and many adult beginners are learning it. It's simple structurally and since i play by ear incorrectly i play it in 'variation'... and invariably everyone who hears it adores it.
a lovely piece... and that is one of my favorite videos ever.

Yes, this piece is from the movie Amalie (sp?). I rented it a year or so ago because of this piece. It's a good movie too and there are other Tiersen pieces in it that I downloaded and learned. I love his music.

"Amélie" is the correct name. Good movie indeed.

To get more into it and to figure out why it has this flowing, peaceful character, I tried to analyse the chord progression a little bit.
Since it contains no leading tone, it has a modal character. It sounds Aeolian. The cadence in the last bar is of plagal nature and has the movement bVII -> I-, which is a typical aeolian cadence.
By the way, all other chord movements in this song are also plagal and move all in ascending thirds.
Every chord has 2 common tones with its neighbouring chords. So if these common tones stay in their position, automatically inversions arise. || E- | G/D | B-/D | D ||
