What does <> mean when it appears over a note? Just accent? (Seeing it over quarter notes in Melody from Album for the Young, Schumann).

What does an upside down "V" mean over a note? (Seeing it over half notes in Avalanche by Stephen Heller).

They both seem to indicate that the notes should be accented, but I had not seen these markings before. Just accent?

Yes. The upside-down "V" is stronger, the <> is a weaker accent.

Hi Ann!

In Schumann, <> over a note means to be expressive. (As if you could cresc. and dim. on one note while playing the piano!)

I love Album for the Young!
