I have inherited a Challen baby grand piano which looks immaculate under the bonnet (it must have been completly renovated) but has not been played for many years. I am intrigued by pianos both mechanically and musically and would like to attempt to regulate the action. It has what I think is called a D type spring and loop action and although I have several books detaling grand action regulating none deal with this particular action except to turn noses up at it. I would be most grateful if someone could recommend a book or pamphlet which would give me a start

There just isn't much information on old piano actions. The only company that I have found that has anything about their old actions is Bluthner. Barring any written specifications, you need to work on general principles: Everything should be as even as possible. Check the key dip, let-off, hammer blow, checking, after-touch, dampers, and repetition, if there is a mechanism for it. There is a reason for each adjustment that can be made. Figure out what it does, and why it does it and how it should be adjusted should follow.
