So I love the piano recordings of them, and got the sheetmusic, already played some of it. How difficult are they? Are they all about the same difficulty, or is there a big difference between them (it seems like the 7th and 9th are especially difficult)? Has anyone here ever played one of them? And how would they compare to the Beethoven Piano sonata's (on difficulty)?

Cheers,

Victor

I've found that except for the Eroica, they get more difficult with each "next" symphony. Opp. 21 and 36 aren't very difficult, but Op. 125 is suicidal.

Regarding pure technical difficulty, they're mostly more difficult than the 31 (I leave out Op. 106, whose fugue could easily beat Liszt's Op. 125 version).

They are difficult. Liszt was trying to compress a symphonic work into a piano piece. Most transcribers would have been happy to skimp on the details, but not Liszt! This results in some very diabolical playing.... Liszt was such a Beethoven admirer, that he gave those transcriptions a lot of love and care.

But this was perfectly suited to Liszt, who frequently thought symphonically when writing for the piano. He really expanded the capabilities of our little instrument.

Not quite sure what you mean with that.(the youtube isn't loading) I have the recordings of Scherbakov, I really love them.

Yeah, Cyprien adds about a million notes on top of what Liszt already wrote; insane.

they are very, very difficult, not only Liszt, for once, respected the notes he was transferring to 2 hands on a silly keyboard, he also respected the genius that originally composed them, so the result is uncompromisingly hard, for me nr.7, my favourite, is the hardest and funniest to play, stay away from nr.9, unless you strive to arrange Mahler 8 for the left hand alone...

Haha yeah I was aware that 7 and 9 will probably impossible. I did play some of the Vivace alla marcia from the last movement of the ninth, its incredible smile.
