Its cover, rolled back halfway; a double sheet of thick black cardboard on the music desk (to eliminate reflections from lights and windows). That's it. Nothing else lives on my piano. I used to have a pencil pot on top, but I accidentally shot too many pencils into the innards, so it now lives on a nearby shelf, as does the music I'm working on.

Stickers. For my students.. And a bunch of essays and random certificates from awards (which I should really move somewhere else). I never practice on it because it's practically impossible..

Two lamps, some music, several trophies and a Bach head from my high school competition days. And also whatever else somebody has happened to set on top. My piano is the living room side table...

I don't like to restrict the sound in any way. When I am practicing or playing by score, the only removable part on my piano will be the music desk (I usually take the fallboard off when playing)

Scores, scores, scores, a small clock shaped like a grand piano, a lamp, and a box with various objects.

My cat.

Wait! How did he get into the house???? Just a second....

...

...

Okay, no more cat on my piano. laugh (I threw him back outside.) Nothing's on my piano now, except my Alkan Etudes Op. 39 book, volume 1. (Yes, the hard copy, Billaudot edition, which I bought at Indiana University for not even $8.)

Varying amounts of music books and loose sheets on the music desk

A miniature clock to keep me from being late to work when I practice in the morning

My music glasses when they aren't on my face

a digital kitchen timer to keep me from devoting all my practice time to one passage - I tend to get obsessive that way

metronome of the old pyramidal sort

Varying amounts of dust

Stuff that I keep on a little Chinese table beside my bench:

a box of kleenex

a divided pickle dish with old marbles and pebbles in it used for counting repetitions-I move them from one side of the dish to the other -a bit of a musical rosary -sort of got the idea from John Field

an old painted Mexican tile I use as a coaster

usually a glass of diet Pepsi or some such on the tile

a couple of pencils

a pad of sticky notes

a few clothes pins used to keep books open and loose sheets in place

A cover, a lamp, metronome, small clock, music scores. I do NOT LIKE pictures, knick knacks, and assorted other stuff--just necessary or usable items.

Half a ton of scores (normally I have a ton of scores on the piano). An eraser. Some books I'm trying to get rid of through various selling sites. My keys. A few pieces of mail. My writing utensils and my metronome travel with me all the time, which is why they aren't living on the piano. Besides which, the cats try to hide pencils under the strings so I've quit leaving them on the music stand.

Absolutely nothing. (Well, dust sometimes.) My wife occasionally sets a vase of artificial flowers on it, but that comes off the next time I play (because I always play with the lid up).

Dust on your pianos? Whenever I don't play my piano, I have a sheet over it to protect it from dust. But I'm out of the house for weeks at a time, so that's why I do that now.

When I was at home, I'd leave the lid open, and whenever the inside got dusty, I would bring in the leaf-blower and dust it out that way! laugh

Scores only : on the music desk.
I do not allow anything to be placed on my pianos. A piano is a musical instrument, not a piece of furniture like a table for displaying 'objets d'art'.

Please don’t tell my friends (or enemies ... got lots) how untidy I am ... but atop the Grotrian Steinweg I can spy MIDI scores in albums, metronome (which I never use), a gadget for tuning the odd wacky string, my H4 recording thingummy, and judging by the slight pong an uneaten ham and tomato sandwich (but it could be the need to take a bath).

Just thought you chaps ought to know.

Metronome. Pencil. Phone. Mirror (the piano is by the front door - I'm not that vain!). Lots and lots of assorted junk. Coasters. A notebook. A couple of pens. Some treadmill screws. There would probably be dust, but there's no room for it.

Dust... but it gets knocked off every day.

Nothing, and no one, is allowed on top of the piano. The lady who slung her purse on the top has never stepped foot in the place since.

Nothing. Neither purse nor person.
