dear forum members,
i have just received an e-mail from phlebas' brother telling me phlebas died suddenly on sunday. the family wanted his friends on the piano forums to know.

i've written an email to frank baxter to alert him and suggest we start a phlebas thread with photos, videos, and sound recordings.

phlebas was a wonderful witty friend and a gifted and generous pianist.

i've sent his brother the URL to pianoworld and will send him one to this and other threads also. my idea is we could create a place here to honor him where his family could come and read our remembrances and condolences.

Oh no!!!
Truly a shock.
I had noticed that he hadn't been here for a few weeks but didn't think much of it -- summer etc. And maybe that's unrelated since as you said, it was sudden.

Truly a shock.

So sad. My condolences to his family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Phlebas at a NY piano crawl in 2003 http://www.pianoworld.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/921398/ .

He was a gentleman and a wonderful piano player.
Talented yet unassuming, easy to chat with.

We've exchanged emails and PMs over the years, I've always appreciated his intelligence and sense of humor.

He will be missed.

I will miss his advice. He knew the answer to my every question. I used to post my questions above ground, but he would be the one answering so I converted to private messages. He was a most extraordinarily accomplished pianist. It was a joy to hear him play in NY.

My condolences to his family.

My condolences to Phlebas' family.

"Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends.

phlebas selected his screen name from a poem, t.s. eliot's "the waste land."

here is the stanza his name came from:

Quote:
IV. DEATH BY WATER

PHLEBAS the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep seas swell
And the profit and loss.
A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
Entering the whirlpool.
Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

i am not sure what to make of that!

Oh dear frown

I didn't know much of Phlebas, but I always remember of his performance of the Chopin Etude Op 10 No 10 in our Pianist Corner Etude E-cital.

Rest in peace, Phlebas.

My sincere condolences to Phlebas's family.

Easily one of my favorite people on the forums. Whenever his name was attached to something, I was sure to read it.

His absence will be conspicuous. I offer my condolences to his family, and my thanks for everything he shared with us during his time here.
