Today, I was watching the store and had a tuner come in to tune a piano as part of a deal. He walked in and struted around like a know-it-all. He played a digital piano and in his own words," This thing is sharp here and flat here, the junk that those companies churn out." How in the world could a computerized digital piano be out of tune? I about blushed from all the foul words that came out of his mouth. I am only a beginning tuner but even I can do a better job than him. He left the unisons in the high treble a mess. It surprises me that he even gets work.He told me that there is no money to be earned in rebuilding pianos but I know better. I must say that he was a real jerk. I am glad that I do not have to work with him or that he is my tuning teacher. Has any one had problems like this or is it just the fact that I live in the Ozarks with a bunch of hillbillies? He was a real winner- HA!

Josef,

Unlike most professional trades, piano tuners do not have to be licensed or certified (although I know some that are certifiable). PTG certification certainly helps but it isn't required either. So anyone with a tuning hammer and a couple of mutes can call themselves a "Piano Tuner".

I would treat this as a learning experience. It's good that you realize you don't want to act like him and that you intend to be a better tuner. Study hard and practice a lot, we need more good tuners who take the profession seriously.
