Hi all,

I am considering to buy a new DP (for more info, see this thread), and I was advised by some friends that it's important that I get something with escapement/let-off simulation.

Q1: do you agree with this? How important is this feature, really? (I am re-learning a piano after a 10-year old pause.)

Q2: What is the cheapest Kawai DP with let-off simulation?
Am I right to assume that the only plastic-keyed Kawai DP-s
with let-off simulation are the CN33 and the MP6?

Thank you for your advice:

I'm not sure which Kawais have let-off simulation. But it's not important. Digital pianos have hammers, but the hammers don't strike any strings. So there's no need for an escapement/letoff ... except for the marketing types who offer a higher-priced unit to cater to those who will pay for this feature.

Hello Csillag,

Some pianists believe that let-off/escapement simulation helps their playing, while others do not believe it makes a terribly significant difference. It's really a personal choice. I strongly recommend that you play-test instruments that do and do not feature let-off simulation, then return to this thread to share your thoughts.

Correct on both counts.

Yesterday I play-tested (among others) the CN33 and the CA63.
The full report is available here.

I have not yet finished the testing, but to me, the CA63 felt significantly better that the CN33, despite the CN33 has let-off, and the CA63 does not.

(Of course they are not in the same league...)

On the other hand, the CN33 did feel better than the CL25, but this does not tell much, because the action is a newer model, so it's supposed to be generally better, regardless of the let-off.

I would like to compare the CN23 and the CN33, but the CN23 is currently not available anywhere in Hungary, so this will have to wait. (And I don't think I can afford the CN33 anyway, so I really hope that I will find that the action is not significantly better than the action of the CN23 smile
