I am playing music at the preparatory D level of The Guild. Does anybody know how that corresponds to the levels for the Certificate of Merit program through MTAC? I would like to know what level I am at in their program.

What does that level require? I know CM but not Guild.

Prep D is roughly equivalent to ABRSM Level 8, if that helps any. It's about where we'd expect serious HS students to be if they are planning to be a music (piano) performance major at most universities.

Ok. So Guild Prep D is ABRSM Level 8. Can anyone compare ABRSM levels to CM levels for me? Is ABRSM Level 8 also level 8 at CM?

How many levels at CM altogether?

I believe there are 9 levels plus a 10th level that is called "advanced"

Perhaps AZN will have a chance latter tonight to weigh in on this, as I'm quite certain he does CM every year.

However, digging through the web, I find MTAC to be rather secretive when it comes to such basic concepts. From reading, it appears they have ten, not eight, levels, in which case, Prep D would probably be roughly the same as level 10.

Typical prep D pieces would include:

Bach - Italian Concerto, 1st mvt

Beethoven Op 13, 3rd mvt

Chopin, Nocturne #9

Schumann Romance

Brahms Rhapsody Op 79, #2

and so on.

The Shostakovitch Three Fantastic Dances has been reclassified to Prep B, #1 + #2, and Prep C, #3.

Actually, CM starts with a Prep Level, then numbered levels through level 9, plus an advanced level. Truly gifted students go on to a program called "Panel."

The info given jives with CM 8-9.

I am picking up on my piano where I left off in my teens and have been learning on my own (I'm in my 40's). I've worked my way through all four prep levels of the guild rep. over the past three years. I was considering doing the certificate of merit program but wasn't sure what level I am, so your information here has really helped. Thank you. I also was wondering if it is even open to adult students. Also, would I need a MTAC teacher to register me, or could I do it on my own?

Only MTAC teachers can register students for CM. Adults participate under the auspices of the teacher.

I agree. It also depends on your sight reading level.
