I have tried searching for this topic to no avail. I am interested in going to an adult piano camp specifically the Sonata camp in Bennington Vermont and would appreciate any reviews of it. I am also considering the Well-Balanced Pianist.
Thanks,
Kim in IL

There have been threads here before. Here's the most recent one (I think): Adult Summer Music Camps I don't think I have heard of the Well Balanced Pianist. Can you give me some details? If you want to do a good search of Piano World, use google and put this first: site:pianoworld.com Sam

I had tried to search using google and this site and didn't have any luck. I'll try this also. The Well-Balanced Pianist came up when I was trying to search this site. It looks interesting but I am leaning toward the Sonata one as I've heard the most about that one. Also, the all inclusive pricing is attractive. The WBP is lodging only most meals are on your own. Thanks for the link to previous discussions. Kim in IL

I went to Well-Balanced Pianist a few years ago and felt like I got a new set of arms! I learned so much - felt better, listened better, was more confident at the piano. I couldn't afford it the last few years but this year I decided I couldn't afford NOT to afford it! I'm registered for the WBP program in CO in July and I can't wait. I remember meeting a lot of different people at the one I went to a few years ago. All levels of pianists and it made for a really supportive group (which I really like!). Highly recommend it.

I can't speak for the camp in Vermont, but I went to my first piano camp last summer in Victoria, B.C. (It wasn't just adults.) I had one of the best times of my life. Fully immersing myself in music without the distractions of other obligations was intoxicating. It didn't matter if you were a beginnner, accomplished artist, 6 years old or 65. Everyone was kind and encouraging and completely in love with music. Needless to say, I'm going again this summer.
Best regards,
Deborah

@gooddog -- Did you go to the camp that's organized by Victoria Conservatory of Music? If so, a couple of follow up questions: 1. The VCM website says that they're doing a new program, "Adult Academy," this year. Do you think you would stick with their "by grades" program? 2. Would you describe your experience there a little more? Were you assigned one teacher for all your private lessons? How did the program complement your regular piano lessons? 3. They say that participants should figure out their own housing plan. What arrangements did you make last year? Like the OP, I'm also toying with the idea of attending a summer camp. Alas, I am slower to make up my mind than the OP :-)

Hi Kim I would urge you to consider the Adult Piano Retreat, at Williams College in the Berkshires. It's in July. My music teacher is one of the faculty, which is how I came to attend last year. The workshop is for adults of all skill levels; participation is capped at 20, I believe. Playing for the other participants is encouraged, but not a required component. It really is a retreat from daily life into a week of music exploration, learning, and achievements - rooms, meals, side trips, private instruction, master classes, practice rooms (lots of pianos), are all well organized. The campus is gorgeous, quiet, feels like it is in the middle of a forest. The faculty are all very experienced musicians and in teaching adults. And besides, it is a ton of fun, being a piano maniac keeping company with other piano maniacs for a week. Here's their website: http://www.williams.edu/admin/conference/docs/Piano2010.pdfI would be happy to provide more information. Just ask. Cathryn

Hi all,
I have taken the plunge, and am going to Adult Piano Camp at Williams College in MA for the first time this summer. I read all 'Adult Camp' threads I could find on Piano World...the other two local for me were Sonata, in VT, and Summerkeys in Maine. Hope to sample those another year.
(I'm back at piano for about a year, after a 47 year hiatus. Mostly lurk here...but stick a toe in from time to time...getting up my nerve for the 'biographical' post, followed by the 'piano hunt' post).

I went to different camps the past 5 years. All of them were well run and I had fun and learn a lot. Last year I tried Well balanced Pianist, my technique improved so much in just one week that I decide to take weekly web lessons with Terry the director. I wish I found them years ago. They really care about all their students and their attention to details and follow ups are increditable. People are warm, supportive and friendly. I will not miss this camp.

I've been to Summerkeys twice. I loved it!! Spending a week in the company of other passionate musician/students, no distractions, private lessons every day and several group classes, performances, outings, 'quiet time' to stroll about the quaint little town. .. the opportunity to work on ensemble pieces......final recital...all amazing. It's actually intense to have lessons every day but wonderful all the same. The final week of camp seems to be mostly strings although they teach piano all weeks. I'd choose a week earlier in the summer next time when there are more pianists about.
I can only plan on every second year and next year I think I'd like to try the Williams College one... but either way I'll be planning for camp next year.
It's the journey not the destination..

I attended the Midsummer Piano Retreat at Williams College last July and intend to return in 2011 (July 23-30). It was fabulous: very well contructed, definitely inspirational, great faculty and a wonderful group of participants(a number of whom return year after year).

Hi Kim in IL You may also want to look at a new winter adult retreat which will be in Texas at Round Top Festival Hill. The web site is httl://festivalhill.org/pianoretreat.
