After a few months of listening to great concert pianists I like to think I'm becoming better at determining the quality of their playing.

For some reason--maybe his age or non-flamboyant manner of playing--I have largely avoided Horowitz knowing fully the great reputation he has.

I'm listening more closely and I'm hearing some great articulation from Horowitz. No doubt with more experience I'll hear a lot more than that from him.

I find the way he positions his hands while playing fascinating. You would think that would hinder his playing but I'm sure, for him, it's most efficient. By "position" I mean he plays "flat handed." Now there's a new expression for you.

I'll be listening to Horowitz more in the future. Will definitely get one or more of his DVDs or CDs.

All the concert pianists fascinate me. Their ability is really amazing.

Arnold Schultz spent years writing The Pianists Finger more or less to validate Horowitz's approach.

So many years since his passing, yet nobody can equal the legend of Vladimir Horowitz. I love his playing, obviously, but sometimes tend to disagree with his approach to music. His sound on the other hand is truly beyond any other pianist. As my all time favorite I still prefer Gould and Argerich.

To validate? Interesting. I say if you can extract the kind of sound from an instrument playing flat handed, great! Do what needs to be done then, play blind-folded and backwards if it works!

I had not heard that Schultz's book was written with that in mind. Attempting to reverse-engineer Horowitz, as it were. A cool idea.

It makes sense to me, to look at somebody playing very well in an odd- or non-standard-looking way and say "Now why does that work?".
