I tried to not like it, but the gold lettering and gold trim actually bring out the gold of the plate and the gold feature on the music desk in the picture with the lid open.

Wow. That's even more atrocious than the electric green Steinway with orange naturals and yellow sharps! When it's already so difficult to sell pianos, why make it harder for yourself?

hahah... I saw the electric green Steinway when I was at the store the other day. I wanted to play it but it had a big "do not play" sign on it.

Philosophical question, who here would buy an 85 note piano?

It would not be my choice, BTW, to alter the piano. But, imagine yourself as a dealer looking for a way to create an interest in that 85 note piano. Art case pianos have been popular for a long time.

Hey this design aesthetic could work really well with the mammoth piano!perhaps the orange and yellow key tops would also be a great addition to that behemoth!

And what was this all about on that Craigslist ad:-

Surely regular tuning isn't mandatory on S&S pianos in order to ensure continued warranty cover?

Hope the seller has lots of room in HIS house, cause unless he refinishes it back to what it should be, that's where it will end up!

That would depend on the piano, of course. There's plenty of 85 key pianos that I'd love to own.
I love the sound of those old pianos (If they are in good condition, that is.), and I'd gladly trade in 4 keys for one.
It's not like I'd really miss them, the majority of music I'd play on it was composed on 85 key pianos, so it's not a big deal.

FWIW, I happen to like the A1's in either 88 or 85 note.

Sure, why not have all 88 notes, still, I think the 85 noter's have been unfairly vilified.

What a way to destroy a beautiful piano. As Greg said, a sign of the times. As has been previously noted, I would think the intersection of "rabid Saints fan" and "Steinway lover" and "deep pockets" is precisely zero.

One of the things about doing an off the wall custom anything is you'd better really like it because you're probably going to own it for a while...

I think unless one has 100K+ to spend, buying a piano usually involves tradeoffs. Last time I looked(5-10 years ago) 85 note rebuilt Steinways were selling at around 10K less than the exact same model/case finish/styling with 88 keys. PW threads have indicated that the number of pieces in the standard classical repertoire than use the top three notes are miniscule, so there is a definite incentive for someone to have three less keys but be able to afford a piano that otherwise would be too expensive.

Well, if the intersection of those three sets (Steinway Lover, Saints Fan, and Deep Pocket) is indeed zero, then this piano's asking price will eventually fall, and fall significantly. That leads to another question.

At what price would someone be willing to buy this piano (with its 85 note scale) and then pay to refinish it more tastefully? .... say, back to how a 19th century piano would have been finished.
