I love the sound of some electric organs. However, I know NOTHING about them!

I was just wondered if there was a website that gave a sort of '101' on organs. I've tried google-ing stuff but haven't really come up on anything.

I'm tempted to pick up an electric Organ in a few months seen as though you seem to be able to pick them up stupidly cheap on eBay. I don't intend to get too serious about it but I'd like to jam out some tunes on one.

Before I start though I would like to know what I'm talking about and what I'm getting into because quite frankly all I know about them is that they sound amazing

So basically to cut a pointlessly long post short; does anyone know a good website to give a sort of '101' in electric organs?

well what kind of electric organ do you want?

A classical organ? A theatre organ? A hammond organ? A home organ (rhythms and sounds like "guitar" and accordion)

There are so many different variations on "electric" organs.


Do you want a home sized? A mid sized? A full sized? An AGO organ?
- 13 pedals, 25 pedals, 32 pedals?
- 1 keyboard, 2 44 note keyboards, 2 61 note keyboards? 3+ 61 note keyboards

Something with rhythms? Something with pipe sounds? Something with simulated leslie speakers?

As you can see, saying "electric organ" Is like saying "car"... There are so many variables that you would want to consider.

A lot of what electronic organ to choose will depend on your goals as an organist. If you want something to fool around on for playing pop music, then a cheap old used spinet model 13 pedals and two small keyboards (people are giving them away these days) will be enough to get you started. If you fall in love with the organ and decide you want to go beyond the fooling around stage you can decide which way you want to go (church, theatre, Home organ). Don't spend a lot of money of a small spinet organ they have zero resale value (one exception to this is if you can find one with an external Leslie speaker cabinet, the speaker will be worth more than the organ).

I would just be aware that many of the organs on sites like e bay and any cheap or free organs on the net have demons in them. They emanate randomness and sometimes they have minds of their own. My friend had one that was so disastrous that we called it the Raunch Bot. Hope you have better luck than we did. Just make sure you do some research before buying just as you are. It is good to poke around and ask.
