the only reason for wanting to learn to play is so I could play my favorite songs by my favorite artists. Now, I can't stare at pop/rock sheet music longer than 10 minutes before I get bored with the same chords and melodys over and over in the span of 4 minutes of music. Not to bring anyone down who enjoys playing contemporary music on the piano, I'm just saying its not my thing. Two years ago, if you would have told me I would be studying classical music, I would have laughed in your face. Anyone have a similar story?

Good for you. Check out some standards though - All Those Things You Are etc. There are plenty with quite sophisticated chord progressions.

Minor correction : "All the Things You Are," a great Kern/Hammerstein song.

Same here, I almost gave up on playing piano after playing years of only pop. Then I discovered Beethoven.

Currently working on: Perfecting the Op 2/1, studying the 27/2 last movement. Chopin Nocturne 32/2 and Posth. C#m, 'Raindrop' prelude and Etude 10/9
Repetoire: Beethoven op 2/1, 10/1(1st, 2nd), 13, 14/1, 27/1(1st, 2nd), 27/2, 28(1st, 2nd), 31/2(1st, 3rd), 49/1, 49/2, 78(1st), 79, 90, 101(1st)

Try some different pop/rock, I'd say. Stevie Wonder has some of the most complex pop music - no less interesting than good classical music and very hard to play well. Bruce Hornsby presents a technical challenge you could take a lifetime to reach, and some of the music is layered and complex, too. Some of the more esoteric Billy Joel - everything from rockabilly to blues to ballads to jazzy to ragtime.

After a lifetime of pop/rock, I also found that classical piano turned out to be far more interesting than I ever expected. It's been great, but if anything, it's made me go back to my pop and play a wider variety of styles, and play them better.

Most pop and rock music (and hymn tunes, gospel songs and nursery songs) rely on just a few harmonies - no wonder you get bored. If they change key it's almost invariably to the dominant.

I sometimes 'vamp' piano accompaniment to pop songs when others are singing, and have to restrain myself from spicing up the boring harmonies.

If music be the food of love, play on!
