I promise to stop gloating about the weather in California. Thought I had a clear moment today, went out for my Wednesday bike ride, got poured on, got a flat tire, froze. I was glad to get out and tune the Hallet Davis Upright with some sluggish keys, and the beater 40 year old u-1. Anyplace warm and dry was good!

I tuned for a 94 year old lady today and her 67 yr old daughter. She is living in a retirement facility. I am new to this business having studied it for a couple of years. This was the most rewarding day at work I have ever had. After I tuned the piano, I tuned her guitar, which I tuned wrong as both of them knew immediately. After some forensic examination of her late husband's harmonicas it seemed that DADGAD might do the trick... She could play a D chord and an A chord! Well that is enough for tons of songs! Needless to say we had fun and her daughter was in tears by the end saying the piano never sounded so good! Then I had to tune the autoharp..... I gave away an extra hour today for free, but I sure had fun.
This job rules.

Thanks to all you long time posters who help us klutz's out from time to time. I have gotten so much help just from lurking on this and other forums.

Welcome to the forum, Joshua! Nice to make people happy with the gift of "in tune" music, eh?

Tuned a solid Kawai GE-1 that was a couple of cents #. I tuned it right where it was, as the weather here will dry out in a hurry.

An old Schomacker Baby, Philadelphia for a music teacher in a school (they still exist--in private schools). Not a bad little piano. Shaped the hammers, adjusted the pitch (15c# in places). I like shaping those old hammers, even though they are probably pretty near dead. It's easy to find the layers of felt when they aren't so damned crammed together by the "hot press" treatment. Smooth and clean after 75 years. Sounded good, too.

A Kawai RX 5 that I tune for a forum member every 3-4 months. Tuned a couple of cents #, voiced for una corda and touched up a couple of slightly zingy notes.

Left early. It's my 5th anniversary today, and my lovely wife and I are going to cash in on my comp dinner at a restaurant I tune for.

Tomorrow, a Kawai RX 7 and a music gig (4 hours, heaven help me...) later in the day with my guitar playing piano salesman buddy.

Two shows, a Kawai 600 and the CFIIIs. It gave me a chance to pull up the string I replaced.

After installing new hammers and shanks in a Howard (Kawai), spending 2 days regulating and voicing, the church pianist came over to try it out. She was around 80 more or less and could barely press the keys all the way down. However, she said it sounded wonderful and so much easier to play. Go Figure. I go the extra mile to make sure my jobs are good but when they cannot really play it's a little deflating. So there sits the piano and will not really be heard to it's potential. A spinet would serve them as well.

Agreed. Do your job, do it well, and the rest will take care of itself. Don’t let this kind of thing weigh you down.

Tuned a God-awful Young Chang grand (G-157???) in a high school auditorium this morning. It has never tuned the same twice since it was new 15 years ago. I tune it as close to their events as possible, as it goes wildly out in about 2 minutes.

I tuned it 4 weeks ago, and the pitch had pushed sharp. It has a climate system, which I installed when the piano was new. It went through the first tank of water, and has never been plugged in since.

Such a relief to walk out of there each time!

I tuned a Young Chang 6'1" the other day. It was my second time to tune it in 9 months. Relatively new grand but it has some of the loosest pins, I have seen in a while.

Tuned and voiced a Yamaha p-22, lubed the creaky damper springs, called my other three clients and rescheduled them for later this week and next week. Feeling kinda crummy today. I'm gonna go hang with my cats and attempt to emulate their relaxation techniques.
