Hello everyone! I have a few questions that I need some help with. I have been to C. Bechstein in NYC before and have played their D282 concert grand which was very nice. I am making a choice between a Fazioli F212 (satin or polished ebony for $120,600.00 no tax free shipping),or a C. Bechstein B212 (satin or polished ebony for $120,900.00 no tax free shipping). The only thing is,is that I have not played either of these models so I can't say which one is better. Please, please don't even say that it's whichever one you like better;that's fine, belive me I know it! But I'm not going to be able to be there...I would most likely be sending a money order for the piano and would then have it shipped to myself here in Maine. I wouldn't be able to be there because of medical issues at this point. So it's baisicly up to you to pick my piano. But really, who would be dissapointed with either!!!!!! laugh...Please don't say this or this would be better because of what it looks like;that matters nothing to me at all...For instance, out of both the pianos, which one has the lightest action??? Which one is better quality??? Is Fazioli good,or is that all hype like Steinway & Sons??? Please help me out with this, and remember,I don't care about the 18k gold plated hardware that Fazioli has on their pianos; I care about the lightest action, and the best quality....And remember,it doesn't take money to be a snob,it takes nothing but pride. I can't stand all of these selfish pride-filled,people out there that only care about themselves mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!......

If you do not care enough to try the pianos, swallow your pride and vanity, buy a much cheaper piano locally, and donate the rest of the money to the charity of your choice.

KB7, I sent you a private message about our shopping experience. Most of what I wrote doesn't need to be private, but I included the price we paid, which I did want to be private. I hope that it might be helpful to you.

Then Jesus Christ should decide which piano you should buy.

There's a three year old Bluthner 7'8" Model 2 on Pianomart for 50K. Send a tech to check it out and save a lot of $.

Haha, Rich thought of that Bluthner before I had chance to write about it. Yes that could be one heck of a great deal.

If you care about the "lightest action and the best quality" then I would go with the Fazioli. I think it has the Bechstein beat in both departments. This however doesn't address the issue of tone which, to me, deserves equal or greater consideration over action and build quality.

Oh to be in such a wonderful position! You must really enjoy playing, play very well or inspire to.

May I ask why you might be leaving out a NY or Hamburg Steinway? or Steingraeber? Mason Hamlin CC? A Bosie?

Experiencing them and their differences on CD recordings might be your next best pursuit. If you know not, we can recommend some good recordings of each of the brands (there was a thread or two on that on PW).

And then finding a dealer which to totally trust to prep the piano in manner you wish. All that and then finding a tech locally or that will travel to your home to tweak the piano of your choice.

It does no good for those of us who have played Fazioli or C Bech pianos that are not concert grands to give opinions. The concert grands seems to be in a world all their own and sometimes seem to be barely attached to their home partners.

I have played many brands of concert grands and would delight to be trying to decided which to purchase which is why I say, 'lucky you'! Piano A for this music or mood. Piano B for that. Piano C for all? I doubt if I could find Piano C.

Perhaps you need someone to fly all around and help with your choice? I know I'd both love and hate to be the one to choose YOUR piano!!!

Assuming the OP is a serious one:

Read the Piano Buyer(link in left hand column about pricing). The prices you mentioned are way too high.

If you cannot play the pianos, I would hire a tech to take a look at them and give you a comparison in any area you want.

It doesn't matter which one you buy. Since you have not played either, you don't know which one is really best for you. So, whichever one you get, that IS the better one. Period. End of story.

Here's a thought- buy the cheaper one and donate the difference to your favorite charity.

Both are very fine pianos. In your scenario, since you have played the Bechstein D282 and like it, I would probably choose the Bechstein. A good local tech will be able to handle any minor issues.

The OP gave several criteria that were important to him, so why does he have to play them to know which is best for her? If, for example, one of the two pianos had a much lighter action than the other, the choice would be obvious.

Though I don't understand the circumstances affecting this purchase, I feel that the purchase of a piano over 100k almost necessitates a personal visit.

I would never feel comfortable making such a large purchase sight-unseen.

Of course, to answer the OP's question, I would probably pick the Bechstein. Both because I love its sound, and because you have already played one and liked it. From what I hear about Fazioli (unfortunately have never played one), its sound doesn't exactly please everyone.

You are fortunate to have such disposable income.
Makes me wonder why you don't do some travel to play them both.
You'll know in an instant what is best.
Nothing others say regarding their choices ought to matter.

I too lean toward the Bechstein, only because you have played it and liked it. While the Fazioli is every bit as good, it has a different tonality and touch. You may or may not like it, so why not go with the sure thing.

I think KB7 is pulling our collective leg here.
If you have that much money to pay $120,900 for either piano without having ever seen it, without negotiating the price down to the street price of $100,000 or less, then you clearly have too much money. You should go ahead and buy both and spare yourself this tough decision.

I so hate to be duped when giving an honest answer. Makes me not want to respond to those that ARE honest, just in case.

If this is the case here, are you now pleased to pull such a prank?

If not, how about some more info for us?

From the OP's posts on other threads we've learned that he bought a 2007 Yamaha P22 for $800 - then sold it and bought a 1970 Steinway 1098 for $400 - which he currently owns. He encourages us to "read the ads" to find the good deals. While his interest in high end pianos may be sincere (he's asked about them in other threads), I question the basic premise of this particular thread.
