Hello, would i lose my 'piano skills' if i were away from playing piano for 5-7 days? I have a 21 day camp soon, and the only time that i could practise is on weekends,
Really hoping for some thoughts and views,
Thank you in advance.

I would say no. I have been away several times for 15 days or more, no possibility to even practice in between. I had to spend a little time refreshing the first day back, but just a little.

You will not lose everything. When you come back you will have some bad days at first, but you'll get over it.

I used to be afraid that I'd totally "lose it" if I even just missed a day.....

It does depend if you have important playing to do when you get back - there is always "rust" on everything when you return from a long time away, so don't go away during the time just before a performance - but in fact if you are working long and hard right before your time away, your music can improve a lot in some ways by letting it "sink in" without playing.

I'm 60 and have many thousands of hours at the piano. When we go on vacation for two weeks or slightly more, it usually takes me two or three days after we return before I feel completely back to where I was before the vacation.

I do notice when I'm on vacation and away from the piano, my dreams while on vacation are extremely vivid - they're like full length movies. I've always thought that by playing so much during the day my brain has a great deal of input. While on vacation that input is absent and my brain creates these movie-like dreams to keep things in balance ... or something like that.

Your brain is executing a de-frag.

Don't worry about it. It's obviously something that is important to you and you won't loose it being away for a few days (or weeks). I actually took an almost 2 month break this last summer because i was traveling and I definitely felt a little rusty when I came back to the piano but pretty quick I got over it...
I can tell you that sometimes breaks like this are a good thing. It makes you appreciate...even more.
While you're on a break I think its a great opportunity to learn a new instrument, you can take with you a harmonica or a recorder which are relatively cheap, light and small instruments...and start exploring them. The other suggestion I have is listen to a lot of music (also new music)I think that even (or maybe especially)if you are not playing you can absorb a lot from listening to music and bring all of that back to the piano when your break is ...over.

I play through songs in my mind. Maybe that's because I prefer visual learning but when I can actually picture the notes and visualize my hands on the keys I figure I know the piece pretty well.

Your brain is executing a de-frag.

I think it's more like filling a gap.
Although, in a way, "executing a de-frag" is (IMO) sort of what all dreams always are....

It's the "IMO" of many sleep researchers as well!
