I have recently purchased a Chas M. Steiff Square Grand Piano at an auction. I was told it was from the 1860's but I cannot find a serial number. Only a four digit number stamped in black on the piano. Any ideas? I am trying to find out more information on the piano and get information on what it would take to refinish or restore the piece. If anyone has any ideas on how I could find a serial number or try and find an exact date on it please let me know! Thank you in advance!

Rebuilding a square grand is not a good idea from a financial point of view, as the cost of rebuilding far exceeds the market value once rebuilt.

If you don't care about the financial aspect, you need to find a rebuilder who has experience with square grands. Among square grands, and they are not particularly rare, Steiff made a very nice instrument. Their factory is was about 10 miles away from my store!

Knowing where you live would help us to recommend a rebuilder if you decide to go through with it. Plan on $10,000 - $25,000.

Try searching for "Stieff" with an "ie". A serial number from 1865 is #1716; in 1870 they began with #2000.
