Hi,
I'm planning to buy a CVP-501 while a friend of mine has bought a DGX-640 recently. I'm quite impressed by its functions. There is about 1500 euros difference in price between the DGX and CVP-501. Now I'm wondering what extra functions the CVP has (except for better speakers + the style creator function). I don't care how it looks like (qua appearance).
Is it worth 1500 euros to buy the CVP-501 instead of a DGX?

The CVP501 is a good piano. It has the GH3 keyboard.
The DGX640 is a bottom of the line model. The GHS keyboard is the main problem. Not good. Also the speakers are inadequate, though it's probably okay if you only use headphones.
Have you tried them both? If you can't feel the keyboard difference (or don't care), get the DGX.
If you really like the feel of the CVP, but can live without all of the accompaniment features (and if you don't really need a console), get the P155 keyboard (much much better than the DGX for not much more money ... $1200 tops, maybe $1000 on holiday sale). It has the GH keyboard ... much much better than the GHS.

I have only owned the DGX640 for a few weeks, but can say that it is very user friendly. This is important to me because this unit has so many built in features.
1. 535 sounds { with several nice sounding pianos for a low price unit}
2. a multitude of digital effects that can be applied to the 535 preset sounds
3. ability to layer, split sounds
4. ability to record on 6 tracks within the unit itself
5. built in metronome and built in chord finder
6. ability to speed up or slow down a recorded performance without changing the key/pitch of that performance.
these are just a few things that come in handy for a songwriter like myself. I had a Yamaha Motif , and I loved the sounds, but I found that unit to be not user friendly and I wanted weighted keys and built in speakers. The dgx 640 suits me fine.

I thing the GH kay action is far better then the GHS for piano sounds. But with 500+ voices you may be buying this keyboard mainly for the non-piano sounds and the automatic loop accompaniments. If that is the case then maybe a non piano like action (GHS) is best.
Also to play a conniving guitar, sax or flute sound you may need those mod wheels on the cheaper DGX. Guitar plays can bend notes, flute players an modulate the breath and a keyboard player needs either wheels or after-touch keys to control articulations. Some peope thing the weighted hammer actions get in the way of non-piano sounds and prefer the lighter keys.
But if what you really want is a piano. Then neither of these is the best use of funds, well the CVP is a better piano because of it's better key action but for same or less cost you can find a better piano in Yamaha's P, CP or CLP lines.
It depends on how you plan to use the keyboard.
