Photo set 3 of the ongoing Steinway Restoration Project has been sent out to those who have signed up to receive it.

If you're interested, but not yet signed up, contact me at behmpiano@gmail.com and I'll send all 3 photo sets out to you and put you on the list. Chuck Behm

Thanks for all the material you are sharing. Many of us appreciate the work and effort you put on it.

I have a question on your Walwort restoration project regarding the pinblock insert restoration method applied to pianos with pinholes closer to the rim than the allowable by the offset router.

The issue is that in some cases the pinholes at the lower end of the bass seem to be too close to the piano rim for the router to remove them. The pic most representative in your set would be the one in Photo set 9 pp88 Photo 179. There you can see the pinblock bass pinholes very close to the rim as well, but I can't tell how close they are. When you tried to remove the pinblock on pp79 Photo 161 using the Bosch router you left 2.5 pins without routing. On Photo 162 you show the offset router used for the treble end of the pinblock. I assume that you used the same tool succesfully at the bass end as well. Have you found a case where even with the offset router you are not able to remove all pinholes? If so what is the best procedure to follow? Also the offset routers I found are all 1/4" chuck and the available bits are not as long as to remove the full pinhole length. Is that an special bit that you use?

If somebody else has a good known method and would like to share ot it will be appreciated.
Regards,
Krikorik

Krikorik - That is a problem. In some cases I have left the last several pinholes, and put in oversize pins.

That type of problem is why on the Steinway we are going with a total pinblock replacement. A little more work, and more pinblock material involved, but absolutely a better solution. Chuck

Thanks but to me total pinblok replacement seems to be more than a little more work, in particular the rim removal with the ~5mm thickness taken by the saw blade that you'll problably have to account for later and its reassembly.

Krikorik
