I not worried about this...mostly just curious. My 3-4 year old Mason BB developed a problem on one note(the D below middle C) about three days ago. If I play the note loudly it sustains for quite a few seconds after I release it. There problem was there for two days, then disappeared yesterday, but it came back today.

Can you tell what the probable cause is from this description or is this one of those things with many possible causes?

temperamental damper wire requires release or perhaps the under lever has a center pin problem.

Is this something that can disappear depending on the humidity or something else? The problem seems to have disappeared again today!

It could. It could also have been dirt, or the sostenuto rod, or any number of things.

Yes, this is something that can change with humidity changes. Have your tech take a look at it. Sometimes the damper rail bushing needs easing.

It could be a part of the damper upon return to its resting position is re-seating itself crookedly on the wire when it lands on it. This can be from a few things one being the damper lifting off crooked to begin with due to improper alignment or a loose screw, (hey, my wife says I have few of those! smile ) or felt that is to wide not allowing the damper to seat back between the wires or strings to close together or what Dan mentioned above or, the damper could need a bit of trimming.... Don't know but, those are my guesses for today. smile

Yep Jerry, the friction thing when the wire slides up and down. The OP states it plays a bit and then stops intermittently…..
Could even be a slow key too…. right at the top of the travel before back to rest…...
Just had the crooked damper felt today in a church. Those dampers in the middle that have half wedge and half flat face…..

Those are frustrating sometimes, aren't they Dan? Especially when the wedged part has been wedging over top instead of in between the wires for so long that there is no way to fix it other than to replace it.

Yes they certainly are……this one was broken partway and then folded over. So you clip it first and then clip the other side; hoping but never able to get it even again; then replace it….which is what I should have done to start with…

some of them Masons can be very resonant particularly in that register. Is it as though the note itself shuts off and a sort of booming sound remains or does the main note shut off and a thinner toned version of the note remains or does the complete sound remain until the damper is good n ready to seat?
