I'm just wondering how you determine voice type and what the ranges are for each voice type. For instance, I sing a lot for fun and found I have a three octave range that I'm very comfortable in. Does that make me a soprano, alto, mezzo, contralto? Just curious. smile

Three octaves? That's quite a range. What are the lowest and hightest notes of your comfortable range?

Most women can sing about the same range of notes, and their comfort in the top or bottom registers is what determines their voice type, not their ability to actually make the sounds.

You will hear that your voice has a "break point" in it, where it changes from a lighter/brighter sound in the high range to a heavier/darker sound in the low range. One very rough inaccurate way of determining your voice type is simply to decide which side of that break your comfort zone is on.

My range is the c below middle c to the one two octaves above. I guess my high "breaking point" is about at the G two octaves up from middle C and my low "breaking point" is at the E below middle C. I sing a soprano in choir but people have commented that my voice has a darker sound than most sopranos. I guess my problem is that I don't sing high well enough to be a true soprano but I don't sing low well enough to be a true alto.
