So my subject line got you !

This is my idea, there may be an exercise in which you:
1) use your left hand to play a chord
2) do an arpeggio with the right hand on that chord
so you can for example do a progression using that pattern !? and then change the key ?

I am bored with the read-memorize-play way of learning....

I suggest doing this with the progressions of each major/minor scale. Or, play with the circle fifths, going either counter clockwise (circle of 4ths) or clockwise (fifths). Try random progressions. Have fun!

Hi Jose
Further to Rui's suggestion, are you doing pop/gospel/rock or blues or jazz ?

Sure. I’m currently studying Joy of Improvisation by Dave Frank.

http://www.amazon.com/Joy-Improv-Book-1-...3588&sr=8-2

You will find 52 blues songs where you can study the use of the I IV V chords (and associated arpeggios), and another 52 jazz songs where you can study the use of the ii V I chords (and associated arpeggios).

This book will provide a fun context for you to study the practical application of chord progressions and arpeggios.

Whether a natural inclination or trial and error or a calamity of self-taught bad habits, I play some form or chord arpeggios a lot, both left hand and right hand.

Most left hand boogie-woogie patterns are simply a form of arpeggios. If fact, I’ve had to work hard at not playing arpeggios in the left hand and just play the root chord (maybe that is why I like boogie-woogie so well grin).

Of course, what sounds good to me may not sound good to anyone else.

Interesting thread, by-the-way…

Rick

Yeah, I’m interested to know what is the process that comes to most people’s minds first:
1. the notes within the arpeggio; or
2. the chord ?

Don't know if I'm qualified to answer your question or not, but the chord has to come first, and then the arpeggio "fits" within the note frame-work of the chord.

All music is based on chord structure, even classical music.

Just my .02...

The chord should come first. Easier to memorize and organize.

Do guitarists also tend to think of the chord first (prior to the individual notes making up the chord) ?
