Given that my P95 was relatively less costly than past controllers/synths and I am enjoying it, I was thinking about getting a SP170 as well, and possibly selling my 61 key Yamaha Motif. What are your thoughts on this? I havent been using the motif much, I get more enjoyment out of turning the P95 (or any DP) on and having internal speakers and not the hassle of connecting a synth or controller.

While I do like the p95 action better, I am still a long time Korg fan and love the sample used in the first sound as well as the Rhodes and Jz Organ on the SP170

I own the SP-170 and love it. Don't know about P95, but if Motif is useless then by all means!

HowardK,

I chose the SP 170 because I liked the piano samples better than Casio px130, and the internal speaker sound better than the P85/95. BUT, it is a very minimally featured instrument--no layering, Midi out only, 1/8 headphone out. I like about 4 of the 10 sample voices, about the same number I like on the P85/95's.

The Motif 61 is a very different instrument. IMHO it is a much better complement to your P85. The SP will only duplicate what you already have. I also like the second EP on my Korg, but don't recognize it as "Rhodes".

I don't know if it would work, but why not try midi out of the P95 to the Motif for the many sounds available, and then midi back to the P95 to use the internal speakers? Then you would have the best of both instruments.

Yesterday I took the Korg out and played through its speakers for a Christmas party in a large home--one of the reasons I bought it. At home however, it is connected to a $100 Cambridge SoundWorks 2.1 speaker system in my office/studio, and that is a BIG improvement over the internal speakers, even more pleasant than using headphones.
