Alexei Sultanov playing Liszt Mephisto Waltz #1, St. Petersburg 1989. YouTube. This version has video. He's off the bench at times!

This is probably the most "physical performance" I've ever seen. He's surely one of the best.

Such unfulfilled talent! He had a most tragic and short life.
A Texas newspaper had a long write-up about the details of his life, his strokes, his financial misfortunes when he became disabled, and the incredible dedication of his young wife. There are videos of this Van Cliburn and Chopin winner playing simple tunes with his only functional hand at nursing homes and such... Very hard to watch.

Here is his Mephisto from the Van Cliburn competition, during which he broke a piano string.. He was 19 I think..

Oh wow, what a wicked performance! Thanks for sharing. Is this performance on a released recording?

The performance followed with: "St. Petersburg 1989" gives you VIDEO along with the sound.

He's completely off the bench at least 3 times.

Although I don't believe in being lucky in life--in one sense--you make your luck. In another sense we all have our share of good and bad luck. Alexi had bad luck with a capital B!

I believe Lola Astanova was a personal friend of Alexei. She has something in memory of him on her site. How great might he have become?
