I just found this on my Netflix Streaming new arrivals list!

..just thought I'd share. It seems perfect for us here in the ABF based on the plot.

---------------------------------------------
Plot:

Director Alex Rotaru profiles the devoted musicians entered in the 2007 International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in Fort Worth, Texas, where any nonprofessional pianist over the age of 35 can fulfill their dreams by shining onstage. Some are classically trained, others are self-taught, but all have "real jobs" -- ranging from dentist to physicist to pro tennis player -- and are avid artists with a lifelong passion for music.

I watched it last week and meant to post about it here. As a documentary it was only so-so but of course the subject matter is dear to me. A couple of things struck me:

Overall with only a few exceptions they were all executive/doctor class or similar. This probably ties in with the type A achiever personality that drives them.

People who played with joy and or played more thoughtful emotive pieces did not go as far as those that played the big, muscular, virtuosic warhorses.

No women made it to the final round.

The guy who won was my least favorite player or maybe I just didn't like him as a person.

Kurt

I expected the Haitian doctor to win - I liked his playing the best. I really liked the 2 ladies as well. I agree that the big concert virtuoso pieces seemed to prevail.

These amateur pianists are definitely in a different class - most could've made a living at it, and all have played most of their lives.

...and Mark Cannon was in this documentary! Neat seeing a familiar face (and forum contributor). smile
