Hi everyone!

My first post in Piano World (in Piano Teachers Forum) blush

I was wondering which forum to post this, but I thought it would be more likely that a piano teacher would have played Mendelssohn's Piano Sonata in G Minor sometime in their career.

If anyone has, I am wondering what was thought of the first movement? Is this something out of the ordinary for Mendelssohn? Is it likely that this piece was one of his most earliest works? Do you think there was some lack of inspiration when he wrote this piece.

I was a little disappointed as the weeks went by as I was practicing it, particularly the bass line from bar 18 and all of page 4 which just does not seem to be going anywhere.

Thankfully, I still have pages 1, 2 and bits of page 3 memorized which I play almost every day. So any inspiration from anyone would be a help.

Best,

Anthony.

Well, I'm not a teacher, but I did consult Grove. The Piano Sonata in G minor (Op. 105) was composed in 1821 when Mendelssohn was 12 years old. It was first published posthumously in 1868 (he died in 1847). Although Mendelssohn was definitely a child prodigy, this sonata was still an early juvenile work.

Thanks for that Packa, I did not see that in Grove.

Best,

Anthony.
