I recently bought a Yamaha C7. It plays beautifully! Thanks to all the posts that I have read on Piano world, I have finally found MY Piano! Thanks to everyone here who posted on all the threads I read, They have all been really helpful.

I bought an older C7 back in September and I really love it! It is bold and powerful and bright and mellow and rich sounding all at the same time! And, the action is smooth and free-flowing. I get a thrill every time I play it.

I’ve owned a few pianos since I have become interested in learning to play the piano. My first decent upright was a 1960’s Cable console. I played it about a year and gave it to my 6 year old granddaughter and bought a 46” Kohler & Campbell studio upright from the late 1960’s. That was actually a pretty nice sounding and playing piano. I sold it for about what I paid for it and bought a Petrof 46” studio from the early 2000’s; now that was a nice sounding and playing piano; I sold the Petrof last year and bought an old 1904 Schiller upright; the Schiller is not much of a musical instrument, but I love the oak cabinet as a piece of furniture.

My first grand piano was a Japanese made Tokai G180 (5’10”) from the late 1980’s that I had for about 4 years. It was a fairly nice piano for what I paid for it and it introduced me to the joys of owning a grand piano. I found myself playing the grand most of the time, even though the Petrof was a nice sounding upright piano. The action and feel of the grand was just better to me. The Tokai was a little bright and the bass was a little thin, but not bad.

As my interest in learning to play the piano grew, and my taste for a nice sounding piano tone developed, I had a desire for a bigger, better grand, especially after having the opportunity to play a 9 foot Kawai concert grand on a few occasions. (That spoiled me!). I came across the vintage Yamaha C7 last September and got it at a price I could afford, though it needed some work. I absolutely love it!!

Okay, I didn’t mean to be so wordy… but that is pretty much the history of my piano ownership.

Congratulations on the C7 series D! I have a 1984 C7D and it is excellent IMHO. The action is great, the volume and power are amazing. I posted a link to John Arpin's book excerpts a while back on the C7D series, check it out on Google Books (Google "Arpin Yamaha C7D" and start reading from page 27)if you haven't read it. He was a big fan of this particular series. I have found a few pianos I preferred to mine, unfortunately they all cost quite a bit more. They are great instruments and great values.

If the photos already exist on another website, it's very easy to embed them in a post here. Simply click on "Switch to full reply screen" if you're not already in it, then click on the fourth little icon from the left (the one with a square with little geometric shapes in it); click on "Insert a non-floating image", then copy and paste the image URL (which you can get by right-clicking on the photo in the dealer website and selecting "copy image location"). Voila, picture should show up.

Congrats. The C6 and C7 are my favorite pianos for home use out of any piano I've ever played. Exquisite action, excellent base, brilliant treble that all comes together like a symphony.

In the picture ,I notice that the piano is on a rug in the shop.
I had a C7, and putting a rug under it made quite a difference in the sound. This was one thing that I learned from reading posts on PW.
Now comes the practice!!!

Superb instrument in my opinion. Sometimes I think it's my favourite instrument of all the ones I play (which include a couple of Bosies, two Steinways and recently a Bechstein, but also several C3s).

WOW, it looks great! The lid removed really gives a nice clear shot. If you enjoy your C7D as much as I have after 16 years, you can't complain!

I have a question for all of the Yamaha experts out there: How come some of the C7 pianos in the 80's had a lighter inner rim veneer while others were flat black? I think they are all lighter after the 80's. My C7 has a flat black inner rim and it is serial number 3980009 from 1984. I have seen many C7's from the 80's with both styles. I don't think this is a musically significant issue but have wondered why they made both types? Maybe it's just marketing, two styles for different tastes? Any ideas, or better yet, real info is appreciated.

I have no idea why some pianos are flat black, and some had veneer rims. There is a possibility that yamaha may have been changing over from flat black to veneer in the 1980's, but that is just a guess/possible explanation. You also mentioned the serial No. in your the last post. the serial no in my C7 is #3895340. Musically, there is no difference between the flat black and veneer, as I have played both.

can i ask how much you paid? i am thinking of buying a c7 or c3 myself and i can't get a good sense of what the street price is from the dealer.

Interesting question… my 1978 Yamaha C7 also has the satin ebony inner rim. I prefer the real wood finish on the inner rim, like Toms new C7. Of course, it is not a big deal and I’m certainly not dissatisfied with it for that reason, since it is only cosmetic. Besides, I keep the lid closed with the fly-lid folded back most of the time.

I have noticed a lot of high quality semi-concert grands with the ebony inner rim.

As I live in Australia, I may not be able to give an accurate price as all pianos sold here are heavily overpriced. I paid something like 25k for a 26 year old C7 with a silent system installed, but if you buy a similar piano overseas (not in Australia), you will get one f0r at least 7k less from what I have read on PW and you are lucky (also, a brand new C7 here would cost around 80K RRP). A c3 would be even less, but both are fantastic pianos that are seriously worth considering.
